And if you're looking for a clear example of how EA leadership seemingly cannot fail, here's a perfect anecdote:

well, on the one hand AI has made things significantly worse for everyone in almost every capacity that it has touched. But on the other hand, the dumbest guy you know can send emails nobody reads really fast now. So it's impossible to say whether it's good or not๏ฟผ

Send this to your producer to inflict an instant sense of cataclysmic dread

while you port and emulate games, I ported Jira to my PSP

Apparently, after 8 years in Seattle, Iโ€™ve become a coffee snob. I honestly didnโ€™t think this had happened to me because Iโ€™m not too picky about my local coffee shops, but I just ordered a cappuccino in a hotel and I honestly canโ€™t drink this

I started reading Yesteryear on my flight today, and even ~100 pages in I can already tell this is an all-timer of a novel

One thing they donโ€™t tell you before moving to the West Coast is that every flight for the rest of your life is going to be EARLY in the morning. Thereโ€™s no other way to make the time zones work without losing a whole day

I donโ€™t talk about work a lot on here because social media is a tricky place for an NDAโ€™d game dev, but itโ€™s pretty heartwarming to see so much love and support for BioWare and everyone who helped work on the last Dragon Age ๐Ÿ’œ

I bought this Mass Effect Grunt plushie a few months after I started working in games full time and heโ€™s been on my desk for my whole career at this point. Iโ€™m giving him a lot of hugs today.

We did quite a lot, but James Power on the BioWare side did a shitton of work to make it shippable in absurdly varied conditions. "So... we have a transparent tunnel. Under water. And we want hair to look good there". WAT! And the (two?) hair artists that authored >100 hair assets. Just amazing

Whether any given AAA game is profitable or a financial disaster is now largely a definitional question around what "counts" as the production for that game and not 1-2 other canceled projects

It's hard to explain now how Bioware changed gaming culture by making games that were such great traditional action RPGs AND so compelling as narratives that it normalized caring about both aspects. It sounds weird now that it ever wasn't.

I never worked at BioWare directly, but one of my proudest professional achievements was the CPU performance optimization work I did on Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Building some of the Frostbite backend for that game was electric, and the BioWare engineers always treated me with such respect. RIP ๐Ÿ’”

But when I showed up to the meeting and showed the summary page with a few screenshots and the high-level numbers, the BioWare Systems team were thrilled and trusting. I'd never in my career had engineers more senior than me have such faith in my ability to do quality work. It was life changing

it's sappy, I know, but I'd never been taken seriously as an engineer like that. Immediate collaboration. Immediate trust. No one claiming my performance numbers were actually evidence that I had broken something. Just the work, as it should be. God, what a time.

The very first project I ever worked on when I started at Frostbite was doing performance optimizations for teleports/level transitions. I shaved nearly a second off of the load times, but past experience told me I wouldn't be believed without a lengthy report on my findings. (cont.)

it cannot actually be ignored or danced around that the closure of BioWare came so soon after the Saudi and Jared Kushner acquisition of EA. they absolutely did take the studio making EAโ€™s broadly queerest games out back and shoot it old yeller style. do not let yourself or colleagues ignore that

I'm not surprised. Nobody I know is surprised. But knowing they had their sights on BioWare doesn't make watching it die hurt any less.

I knew the first thing our new corporate overlords would kill would be the studio beloved by women and queer people.
