Democracy is not a gift bestowed by Brussels or Washington. It is fought for from below. Those who spent years accommodating authoritarian power should perhaps stop lecturing the people challenging it. Young activists and students still have key role to play, in Europe too

Similar messages are circulating across different cities, from what I hear from friends and colleagues they are spreading fear among students and families. The effect is tangible: anxiety, disrupted school attendance, and a growing sense that public spaces are no longer safe. 2/

Something happened in Italy today. For the first time, the entire centre-left spectrum — from the 5 Star Movement and the Greens-Left Alliance to the Democrats, Renzi’s centrists and the pro-European +Europa — found common ground in challenging NATO-driven rearmament.
