I got angrier and angrier as I wrote this for @damemagazine.bsky.social. The collapse of this country’s civic morality dovetails with the cruelty and corruption that dominates policy. The rest of our institutions are being dragged down by or are abetting it. That’s the thing on my mind this 4th.

damemagazine.comHow Trumpism Is Destroying America's Civic MoralityTrumpism has normalized cruelty, corruption, and public spectacle. Rebuilding democracy requires restoring civic morality, accountability, and decency.

Ok, I'm noodling with an essay about this. It would be partly an obit, but I want to use it more to explore how academia has shifted since my mentor entered it, and what we've lost as a result. It's part eulogy, part "where are we" with higher ed. The Chronicle said no. Would anybody else care?

Zeb Larson@zeblarson.bsky.social

I had just e-mailed Steve a few weeks ago, telling him about my son and daughter. Even at 85 he was still busy working. He was deep into litigation with a tribe, had just published another book, had lecture series coming up, and was still working with the Teddy Roosevelt Library.

I haven’t had a migraine in at least a year, and the fact that it fell on the same day that Ole (for the first time) decided to refuse any kind of nap is almost kind of funny

A few leaves wind up as mulch for my garden beds, some go into my compost bins as brown matter, and the rest just get raked into big piles under my pine trees to break down. It’s amazing. Do it.

Computing is a moral activity, and we must take responsibility for its creation and the consequences of surrendering ourselves to it.

Oh thank God, now Meta’s AI can summarize the artwork of a bunch of bunnies throwing a kegger. I was really struggling with this until now.

The fact that my older kid is sleeping until 6:45 or 7 some mornings is undercut by the looming threat of daylight savings, which will promptly refuck the whole house’s delicate sleep schedule.

Exhausted by stupidity: Melania negotiated a 'ceasefire' while Trump bleated like a sheep. A THREAD.

1. I am very tired of being asked to be stupid. I know that is not the most important thing right now. There are many more serious consequences to electing a criminal president who is burning up the economy.

I’m rewatching Deadwood and W. Earl Brown does not get enough credit for making Dan Dority so funny. "You're about to take a goddamn beating for every time I've been asked 'What For' already today.”

The comparison between marriage equality and trans rights doesn't hold water. Marriage equality was an expansion of rights for queer folk. But trans people have seen rights they had for decades stripped away. Dozens of Dem politicians (& the DCCC) say they don't want those rights to be restored.

some Ohio Republicans - Sen Husted, Gov DeWine, SOS LaRose - said they wouldn't have run the Amy Acton mom ad. But none said they'd pull their Ramaswamy endorsement. Other endorsers - Sen Moreno, former Sen Rob Portman- didn't respond to my request for comment. And some, like Vance, embrace the spot

We might laugh at this or stare at it in pure disbelief but yes, this is the reactionary mind on display here. The smartypants people calling me a witless ignoranus on social media are in fact a globe-bestriding tyrannical elite that must be destroyed. Like Godzilla, but worse.

“Where did all the liberal hippie boomers go?!” is one of those questions you see on social media and…uh, that’s a tricky one. Were hippies necessarily liberal or progressive? No, there was a strongly consumerist and individualistic grain in hippie-dom running alongside everything else.

Zeb Larson@zeblarson.bsky.social

People get hung up over the size of antiwar movements on campuses but miss the fact that just over a quarter of boomers in the U.S. went to college. That isn’t to say the ones outside of higher education were actively in the tank for it, but campus activism only sheds so much light.

Were all boomers liberal when they were younger? I dunno man, Nixon got 48% of the 18-24 vote in 1972 and 52% of the under 30 vote. We inaugurated the 26th Amendment by having young voters help to elect a Republican. And they were pretty evenly split on Carter v Ford 4 years later.

What was the Halloween candy you hated getting above all others? For me, it was Bit-O-Honey, which by the third grade I had already dubbed Bit-O-Shit.

Teenagers trick or treating is actually my fave, because those are the kids who are really committed to whatever costume they’re wearing.

Crip Dyke@cripdyke.bsky.social

The only reason that 35 year olds are complaining about 18 year olds getting some candy is that the 35yos were hoping no one would be trick or treating and they could eat all the candy themselves.

I really think this is the campaign melting down, knowing they’re going to lose, and throwing the ugliest temper tantrum ever recorded in the state of Ohio.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

Ramaswamy confirmed his campaign is responsible for an ad exploiting his opponent’s childhood rape and abuse. Then his campaign doubled down: It plans to spend $4 million to air the ad in the final stretch before Election Day.

I buy this. I was already playing D&D then because I played with my dad but after BG, suddenly a lot of my friends had *some* idea what D&D was and wanted to learn more.

Kieron Gillen@kierongillen.bsky.social

And as an aside - you should not doubt how fucking uncool D&D was in 1998 as a game, and how poisoned that particular well had been for a while. Baldur's Gate turned that around, and if you do want a road from D&D then to D&D now, it does strike me that Bioware's needs more credit than they get.

🧵We're being told AI is the future. That we should embrace it, adapt to it, and stop asking so many questions. But who decided we wanted a future where algorithms cut off healthcare, surveillance is everywhere, and Big Tech gets to make the rules?

Look if we’re picking on 19th century writers for bad views, you have to at least call out Whitman, who thought the Mexican American War was totally awesome and would definitely speed up the disappearance of some races in favor of Anglo Saxons. Thoreau spent time in jail for opposing that war.

Mike Tanier@miketanier.bsky.social

Oh he stunk on ice. But no one likes him anymore. The list is coming for Henry David Thoreau, all-time poser and dillitente who would have like 5 million followers for his "Outdoorsman Blog" today, broadcast from his parents' backyard.

What was the first car you ever dreamed of owning, and do you still want one today?

In adulthood I only like little meep-meep cars like Fiats. If it’s too big to go meep-meep, I don’t want to drive it. (I currently drive a car too big to go meep-meep because fitting two car seats and two adults into a meep-meep car is a challenge)

There was somebody on here last year whose posts were all about how terrible the funding cuts for STEM research have been, but then went on a long rant about how she had no obligation to humanities folks and that they needed to fend for themselves. I think about this more than I should.

As a friend of mine has pointed out, women tend to do far better in polyamorous or open circles than men so there’s also a karmic comeuppance lurking around the corner for guys too cowardly to openly break up or just wondering what’s over the backyard fence.

This is actually a pet issue of mine because it promotes absolute nothingburger takes that trick people into thinking there’s a deeper societal dynamic at play. The archetype is “teenaged Marxist Leninist was mean to David Brooks, civilization in decline” but it’s infected journalism at large.

Zeb Larson@zeblarson.bsky.social

This also dovetails with one of the worse trends in 21st century journalism, which is credulous writing about what people are talking about on the internet.
