And now back to my full time job, texting the word "stop" to every living Democrat.

Finished Belmont’s Curse! Good game. Can be a little frustrating to start, but as it expands, it hits that sweet spot of encouraging exploration while making you earn every step. Lots of “oh fuck I can’t do that—but maybe?” platforming challenges.

Replaying the Silent Hill 2 remake—it’s more flawed than I think I realized at first, mostly because they get enough of what made the original great right that I overlooked the padding and cruft. I don’t have high hopes for Bloober’s SH1 remake, because they’ll likely end up changing more.

This was decent, provided you just want a solidly made action thriller with a nasty edge. Mostly interesting now as a period piece in terms of editing and camera-work. Not a patch on the original, which was unsettling and eerily sad in a way modern horror often avoids.

Watching tonight: THE CRAZIES, the remake. Romero’s original is great, but I heard the remake’s pretty good? It has Timothy Olyphant playing a cop, which is already a good sign.

I get frustrated the way a lot of modern discussion of fiction revolves around psychoanalyzing characters as if they were real people. I just watched a generally very good video about Pale Fire that falls into the trap of treating Kinbote’s mental state as a quantifiable “solution” to the text.

I find YA fiction mostly boring because -all- it has is story. I love great stories, but those are relatively rare; most of the time in YA stuff (and a lot of modern stuff in general), at best, it’s a clever use of old tropes, presented with enough polish to make them new.

I need richer food. Not always (I totally get rereading familiar stuff you love) but I can very rarely pick something up and enjoy it just because the story’s decent. I need more texture, more intentionally—more rigor, you might say.

The “solution” to the mystery of Pale Fire is that it’s a novel written by Nabokov. That’s the endpoint, and the joy of the thing is the way he contrasts the devastating banality of life with the biting madness of art; it is the expression of these imagined personalities colliding.

i have this pet theory that one of the reasons we're in the trouble we're in is that we shifted from "doing the right thing" to "figuring out how to game the system on the theory that it will eventually, someday, do the right thing," and assholes like Yglesias benefit enormously from the shift.

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

the idea that you can weaponize injustice against the state that exploits it by sitting home and (probably) voting is fundamentally absurd--but it's comforting, because it allows you to frame moral cowardice as a brilliant gambit. the future is always the future. you never get proven "wrong."

i'm not completely sure, but the first vivid memory i have of seeing a movie in the theater is my mom taking me to a revival showing of Snow White, and her having to take me out of the theater because i freaked out when the Queen goes full witch. early '80s, would've been.

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

what's frustrating in this case is that I don't even know if they'll let me know if I didn't get the job--i forgot to ask, and i know most places don't bother. so it's possible i've already been turned down, but i still have to wait. sigh.

i also can't call and ask, because i don't want to seem too eager. i'm medicated, i'm more clear-headed now than i have been in years, and i'm _still_ an anxious mess about this stuff. everybody is, i guess, but i'm lucky, i feel compelled to talk about it.

Bumping this because...well, why not.

I just got laid off from my full-time job, which is awful. If you're looking to hire someone (or know someone looking to hire someone) who's excellent at writing, editing, communications in general, and/or cultural criticism, email me at mousterpiececinema at gmail dot com. Don't be shy! Seriously.

That isn’t what’s “enough.” What’s enough is that they know this will hurt her and things have gotten awful enough that they’re betting they can get away with it. No one supporting this disbelieves the allegations. It is simply enough to find a potential lever of power and pull it.

You know what pissed me off about the Ramaswamy ad beyond the obvious grotesqueries? There’s no EVIDENCE disputing Acton’s life story. There are court proceedings backing up her story. And all Ramaswamy’s got is the (accused) mother saying “nu uh” and somehow that’s enough? FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY

had a funny, grim thought: I'm trying to get my first colonoscopy done before my current health insurance runs out, and i just today realized, if they did find something right before i lose health care... what the fuck would i do about it?

That was… okay! More of a fun curiosity than an effective horror film, but it’s neat to see people figuring out how to use the faux-doc form. Ending doesn’t work—feels someone wrote themselves into a hole and decided to dig their way out.

watching THE LAST BROADCAST tonight, which I think I’ve seen before but don’t remember. I know it’s often mentioned as a precursor to Blair Witch.

think about it: the whole reason "spooky" exists is because of folks who like the trappings for horror without the actual scares. it's not a new concept. and while everything I've heard about Flanagan's CARRIE adaptation annoys me, real horror will always be what lasts.
