The essay that we wrote on THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS for Criterion's 4k release is now online. This is a piece about Jame Gumb that addresses how the transgender perception of the character was formed. criterion-v2.herokuapp.com/current/post...

Wonderful piece - as always - from Willow. Did I already mention that everyone should be reading her? Because you should.

I wrote about Ken Russell's THE DEVILS for my reader's choice series. If you've been following this account this week then you'll already know that this is one of my favorite films. www.patreon.com/willowcately...

Some of you lucky souls can still go see the new restoration of THE DEVILS at your local cinema. Definitely make time for it if it is playing near you. Sample paragraph:

This is the second booklet essay that I have worked on for Criterion, and I hope that I can do more in the future. It was a great honor and privilege to bring a trans perspective to their new release of this film. Hope y'all enjoy the disc if you picked it up during their flash sale!

Happy Birthday to the awesome Willow Maclay! Consider this another entry in my ongoing series of critics everyone should be reading!

Highly recommend this book, I learned a lot, really engaging for anyone interested in movies. There's something about the tone of the book that I always found really respectful of the tragedy and adversity in these stories. It's a book about trans people film history clearly written with love.

THE DEVILS has kind of been marketed as a HARDCORE, NASTY MOVIE, FINALLY UNLEASHED!!! and it is that sometimes, but you'll also want to go watch this movie for the same reason you'd watch a film of such pristine art direction as BARRY LYNDON. It's one of the most beautiful films ever made.

THE DEVILS is also a politically ferocious film & is arguably more relevant now. It's essentially about the collision of the individual and the state and how an individual, and designated groups, can be crushed by the ruling class, and how the populace can be seduced to cheer on that destruction

The thesis is not that different from SALO, and while we respect SALO's political rigorousness, THE DEVILS is often not thought of in the same breath, because Ken Russell is a maximalist. However, this film should be. Also of note to my queer fam: Derek Jarman got his start working on this movie

There's probably something to be said about the three splashiest Canadian films this year being helmed by filmmakers who have, or are still currently, modifying the concepts of documentary, reality and fiction to produce new spins on narrative cinema.

Canada has a robust history of documentary filmmaking. Filmmakers here, by necessity, work in documentary or TV to get reps. Cronenberg is the exception, not the rule. But here we are with Fielder, Johnson & Romvari; all of whom w/ that history of docs & using it for narrative means

My essay on parts 7 and 8 will be up sometime next week, as will my reader's choice essay on THE DEVILS. Go watch THE DEVILS. It's one of the greatest films of all time

My series on HALLOWEEN continues, and this time around I am looking at parts 4, 5 and 6, the nostalgic attachment to the image of Myers, how that helps cement his image in the cultural imagination, and the up and down quality of these films. www.patreon.com/willowcately...

It's going to be so funny to write about The Devils because the entire piece is going to be a constellation of sentences that amount to, "and this fucken sick thing happens, and then this fucken sick thing happens". I can't wait to begin writing that tomorrow haha

I want them to release all the beatles movies separately because I think it would be very funny if we ended up in a situation where the Paul McCartney biopic ended up making less money than the others.

You can realistically go see THE DEVILS and YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING as a double feature this weekend & I think that's great. A very apocalyptic end of cinema feel at the multiplexes. How wonderful

Happy KEN RUSSELL'S THE DEVILS week to film perverts everywhere!!!!!! IT IS OUR TIME!!!!!!

The other great "what the fuck is happening here?" surrealist slasher is Canada's HELLO MARY LOU: PROM NIGHT 2, which is also about the 50s haunting the 80s via the possession of our final girl by a Dead Boomer Mean Girl. There's a scene involving a rocking horse you'll never forget.

Willow Catelyn Maclay@willowcatelyn.bsky.social

SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE 2 (Deborah Brock, 1987) The formula had run dry on slashers & some directors opted for surrealism near the end. SPM2 has a looping mechanic of repressed memories/desire of a rockabilly greaser killing off the feminine new wave. Subversive thematics of the 50s haunting the 80s
