When I worked for Social Security processing SSI claims I had to request birth certificates many times for people who didn’t have them. If the person was Black and from the South often no bc was recorded and we had to use secondary sources. Birth records there were segregated too.

I can speak from present day experience - they’re throwing unnecessary bumps in the road when trying to get a copy of your birth certificate. If you need one, don’t wait because they can take weeks to arrive in the mail.

It’s the third time they’re trying. 1) passed House, died in Senate. 2) passed House last April. Senate about to vote on it 3) just passed the House. Senate will vote. Meanwhile, they tried to get the individual pieces enacted, since they couldn’t get them passed together.

It’s not about paperwork. You can get a Real ID. It’s not sufficient under this bill. And if the names don’t match, there is no provision in this bill. But the ending mail-in and early voting, mandating purges and ending the pre-election moratorium are the real dangers.

Every woman needs to get a passport NOW, real ID is a money grab and you need to renew them more often and they won't be valid if these voter suppression laws go through. Is it expensive, yes, is it a pain, yes- do it anyway, now, while you can!

That is their point? Their biggest purpose is to cause chaos and confusion during this election. Two of the provisions of the new bill take effect immediately. And that includes required monthly purges and no election moratorium.

It’s typical republican behavior to try to suppress the vote in order to win the midterm elections. Their plan probably means in red precincts there will be no requirement for womens’ names matching their birth certificates. But they will in blue precincts.

And, yes, these are Canada-wide but just for Federal elections. For Provincial and Municipal elections we use provincial rules which are the same in BC. We are asked at the time of voting to swear or affirm that we are citizens of Canada and residents of the riding but not required to show papers.

They’re also talking about major purges of the voter rolls. If you’ve been removed from the voter rolls and have to reapply you’ll have to prove citizenship. It’s part of the bill. There has been many instances of voters removed from the voter rolls fraudulently. It’s apparently the new norm.

Getting a RealID usually takes both a birth certificate and a marriage certificate. Same for a passports. If it works like those, those two documents should be what you need. Though I wouldn't put it past them to turn people away regardless.

why can’t we use real ID? States already collected certified copies of birth certificate and any doc associated with name change. eg marriage certificates, divorce (if your name changed) etc. Airlines are using them for domestic travel.. seems the election system could use that too.

Foundlings. Orphans. Wards of the state. People who are adopted. Often birth certificates were never filed, or filed without a name, or something like “Baby Unknown.” You need a whole court case to establish your identity, through no fault of your own.

Nice strawman, dingus. Nobody's claiming that passport is the only form of ID. The point is that many people do not one of the alternative forms of citizenship-proving ID either. Birth certificate only proves citizenship if you were born in the US and not naturalised, for example.

Seems that it only affects registered voters IF they change their address or party affiliation. But, the other person who responded is correct…the bill calls for purging the rolls based on technicalities which would require ppl to register again and have to meet the ridiculous requirements.

Not YET. That is their goal, though. And a big part of it is in the new bills. Monthly REQUIRED purges and no 90-day pre-election moratorium. That’s part of why they want all the voter data. Mass purges of people they don’t like (Dems, women, POC, people who live in less affluent areas) the day

The big news here is that individual STATES have the power to disregard such 'edicts' voted in by the current ReTHUGlican-dominated regime, but are just not saying anything about it so far. That MAY trigger the beginning of a 'soft secession', but we'll see by the time of this year's election. 🥊🙏
