Insane article. The vast majority of this increase is because we were exposed to burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s our generation’s agent orange. As a burn pit veteran myself, the economist is absolutely wrong here. My guess is there were no burn pit vets on the board that wrote this

This is framing to further define Vets along with 'welfare moms'. Most vets have to constantly struggle for everything they get. When there are programs available to aid them, they only find out from talking to other Vets. Vets deserve more than a couple 'thanks' during picnic holidays.

The first mistake was bothering to read 'The Economist' for news on US politics. Anyone claiming that any domestic group — aside from corporations and farms — is receiving "absurdly generous benefits" from the US government is delusional.

They were already getting the bare minimum. They’re finally getting what they should have been getting all along. This country wants people to put themselves in harms way for it, but doesn’t want to return any favors. It’s a one way street.

From the Republican-English Dictionary: GENEROUS BENEFITS, np. A phrase used to implicitly frame the argument that whoever is receiving “generous benefits” has not earned them. See also: The term "ENTITLEMENTS".

This is a naked attempt to start grooming the public to accept austerity so the rich can get richer. I think The Economist and their readers enjoy ABSURD levels of personal safety due to the sacrifices of Veterans. The poor already disproportionately carry the burden of Serving in the Military. I

My son served in Afghanistan. He was exposed to burn pits. His body took a beating-the exhaustion, making jumps, artillery fire. He’s in pain all the time but resisted taking benefits. Nobody blinks at the millions made by defense contractors but let’s get mad at veterans who need $ for treatment

I want you to have ALL THE BENEFITS! Maybe we take the money from Elon lol. I’m allergic to basically outside and have all 7 of the asthmas. I admire and respect all that you guys do as I could not do it.

I’ve always said “K2 is GWOTs agent orange.” Glad to see others are catching on. No doubt Trumpism is prepping the next American burn pit and we Vets, along with our republic’s pillars of democracy, are seen only as waste to burn.

If anyone actually thinks Trump won't purposely target Vets and their benefits, strictly because Trump is a coward and is jealous of our sacrifice, you aren't paying attention. He'll attack us because he can't be us.

It took #jonstewart to embarrass #congress to keep the healthcare to 9-11 responders, & it’s going to take all of us to fully embarrass them again for reducing healthcare to veterans. (MAGA) Republicans version of #fiscalresponsibility is to take benefits and resources from people who need it for

themselves. They continue to prove this especially now from school free meal plans, healthcare for women, healthcare, and especially military/ veteran benefits and funding. Funny how this administration wants to weaken our military from the inside…. Again….

Nope just the MSM taking a knee, genuflecting as the Catholics would say, to the GOp to have an excuse to cut money from the people who need it...typical of the gop...pieces of shit...

"complicate debt-reduction efforts" Republicans add 8 trillion to the debt, saying "it'll pay for itself". Now it's "what can we do about this debt? Take it out on vets, students, the poor, the hungry, kids"

Generous? That is insulting! We need to always take care of our veterans. My husband was in Viet Nam. He has two purple hearts. After all these years he still has nightmares. He screams in his sleep and seems to be fighting with someone. When they are hurt it stays with them forever.

Sounds like my USMC Camp Lejeune & DSDS/Op IF Mum,Dad,Uncle & Godfathers, my Army DSDS/Op IF Stepdad & my Army Vietnam War neighbor w/Agent Orange cancer. My lil bro & I were diagnosed w/lifelong medical conditions caused by the poison water but the USMC never paid a dime.

In Canada our #veterans are treated very well by veterans affairs We have programs that 🪵 blow American vets 💀 s 😳😳😁 Never ever Go short on those who provide the freedom others enjoy #rules #veteran

Also the rise in disability payments is PACT related. You're handing out more ratings to people who have been fighting for years and don't forget survivors DIC benefits an service connected burial Benefits.

The only shred of argument I could see to this was making hypertension a presumptive for AO but other than that it's extremely difficult to get a favorable rating without a presumptive.

My brother died at 49 from lung cancer due to toxic exposures during the Gulf War. Thanks to the Pact Act, his family is receiving benefits that will help my sister-in-law get them through college. He enlisted right after high school. 💔

It’s the Republican Party that wants to cut veteran benefits and the right wing media campaign to soften the public up for it is starting. Just like the RW ‘ welfare Queen’ campaigns of the past. It’s an old playbook.

Beneath the guise of generosity, they paint the poisoned as greedy, their scars dismissed as marks of privilege. A soldier's worth reduced to lies, setting the people against their guardians. The burn pits still smolder, yet it’s the truth that chokes the air. March as one, endure as all.

The Economist seems to have a 'hate on' for disabled veterans. This is eerily similar to Trump's statement about John McCain, 'I like my heroes to have not been captured'. The Economist claims to be a champion of progress??? If it looks and smells like propaganda... then it's a propaganda rag.

It makes me sick that they would even publish a piece of trash like this. Morons like this expect soldiers to lay their life on the line for this country, and then bitch about it when veterans expect some help for injuries or illnesses that were incurred during their service. They can go to Hell.

My dad—drafted to fight overseas in Vietnam—is FINALLY in his 70s getting benefits for his condition related to Agent Orange thanks to the PACT Act. The absolute least we can do is take care of our vets, ESPECIALLY conditions directly related to their service.

I've been on disability almost 30years, I'm terrified of losing my medical & SSID, I get $943 a month & but make too much for food stamps. I barely survive on what I get, if I didn't live w/ my mom & bro I couldn't make it, they're disabled too. We need more help for disabled folks.

We need a lot more help for disabled folks, not less. If all the reports are correct, they're going to take away what little help we have to pay for more tax cuts for the rich

And most of them avoided serving in the military, we carried the load, exposed ourselves to toxic chemicals which gave us cancer, some had died in the war and didn’t realize it until years after they came home! Generous benefits? Bullshit!

It took decades to acknowledge the effects of agent orange. Burn pit exposure by comparison happened quickly. So those veterans issues can be addressed quicker to the benefit for them and their families

I do know several non burn pit ‘disabled’ vets who get 100% disability but work full time in physically demanding jobs. Two are dog trainers and one is secret service. I’m all for actually disabled vets getting what they are entitled to. But there are some who game the system

Thank you for your service, is just right wing political correctness. The country voted for a candidate, who died for this country, suckers and losers. They don’t give a damn really.

Here's the thing about caring Phil, sometimes you care, but when you are so poor you eat Ramen noodles like me it's not pretending to say I can't give out money, but I do wish that I could so I do effing care man.

Severely wounded vets are a relatively recent phenomenon.. there was an exhibit at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia a few years ago about civil war injuries and how the science of wound care started to evolve. Very, very cool.

My friend's niece is a pharmacist for the VA, for diabetes. She was told if project 2025 is implemented, she would lose her job because they'll only care for war related healthcare.

My father was on the submarines and died of lung cancer /asbestosis he was granted 100% benefits for one month of his life. It is not easy to get benefits from the VA. We owe it to our veterans for what they gave for our freedoms. I know this new era will not be kind to our veterans at all

I work with guys who are “90% disabled” who make $500k a year working their jobs. They finish work and go for runs. Most voted for trump. I’m excited to see them stop getting $4k of taxpayers per month, especially since most of the idiots voted for this upcoming shitshow

It’s just a well known running scam for these guys. They all flew airplanes. Many got in trouble last year when the FAA realized they were almost wholly disabled for Uncle Sam, yet disclosed no medical issues on their FAA medical exam…

Written for MAGAts to praise the 🍊🍕💩 for taking care of veterans...while my husband (20 year USN submarine vet) and FIL (Vietnam Vet and sadly MAGA) have applied numerous times for VA benefits only to be denied.

The country voted for a candidate who called those, who died for this country, suckers and losers. Is anyone surprised that his ilk want to deny veterans any compensation. Whatever the veterans get it isn’t enough.

I refuse to read the article because I’m sure it’s some obtuse hit piece on Vets. I come from a military family with several members currently on VA benefits and if the quality of care they receive is “generous”, I am Alfred Hitchcock.

I worked with a young vet who never took his cap off because his scalp was so damaged. What’s fair compensation for the physical and emotional scars he deals with; the rejection from employers and potential partners?

I don't see any of these replies addressing any of the actual claims in the article. I understand it's paywalled, but most of the replies seem to assume this focuses on medical benefits; it is mostly about disability benefits. Can anybody with knowledge on the subject address the actual claims?

I can't access the article either. It's a British journal. Was it written about British disability benefits or US disability benefits? Mind you, it doesn't affect the commentary here, where many say their benefits are small or at risk, while billionaires get tax cuts, which is outrageous regardless.

And as an Agent Orange baby w/the most severe version of Spina Bifida & level III compensation, even with SS, it's barely enough to live on. 42yrs of hospital trips, 50+surgeries, I only got reimbursement from the date I applied to the date awarded. It's more than I had, but hardly seems fair.

Maybe stop putting people in harm's way and there would be fewer disabilities.... bottom line, the Government undertook a contract with service members which includes disability if they are injured while in service and is obligated to honor it.

taken by a very wealthy family here in our area that runs several businesses... but only supplies a handful of non-family employees...they are staunch MAGAts that are against student loan forgiveness & socialism though

The economist is not the publication it used to be. Once firmly against "strong men" and dictators, they've softened much of their reporting and published a number of pieces favorable to chump & quite negative about Biden earlier in the year.

Think nowadays majority owned by the Agnelli family behind Fiat; who with VW sponsored '70s Club of Rome on the Rockefeller (then Exxon) Estate, promoting 'limits to growth', 'population bomb' etc. greenwashing & astroturfing of social Darwinism (<0.01%).

They send our youth into harm's way and then can't be bothered to take care of them. But golly gee let's fly a flag on our barns and cars and look all "patriotic". And then elect a con man and sycophants who will gut programs to help injured vets. My head hurts. My heart hurts.

And it must constantly be emphasized, They And Their Kids Don't Serve. They're not sending their own off to kill and die to protect supply chains for the donor class here, they send the children of actual tax payers, whose wages they resent and will short if given the chance. #TaxTheRich

If American civilians want to understand how much they owe veterans then veterans should be able to pick random civilians to risk their lives to provide benefits for the vets. After all, that's what vets promise to do for civilians.

The new administration’s leader blames GIs for dying, injuries and even being captured. I don’t expect him to support post service traumas or injuries if he can avoid Congressional mandates.

Sometimes doing the Right Thing is hard - esp. when dealing with political cesspools like the current environment. Does NOT mean that should stop trying though. Fact that so many veterans (among sp many others) were low-information in this election is irrelevant. Veterans still need protection

What is different this time is the government-adjacent Dept of government efficiency b.s. They will cut without bipartisan vote. A smooth talking billionaire and a drug-addled autistic faux-intelligent billionaire. Oh? Is that not legal? Ha!

I don't think anything is "absurdly generous" for those injured while serving their country. If you have the resources and the will to send them into harms way, you better have the resources and the will to take care of them afterwards.
