I'm making sure to emphasize this because the pandemic was the whole reason I stopped proactively supporting capitalism and this was a huge part of that they showed their colors already

crypto mining is part of it but the causes of chip shortages during the pandemic existed outside of that, this is literally the fault of a number of guys you could not fill most bars with

Except, as high as the demand was, consumers have always been a minority of it all Notice how the years with better pricing are the ones where the market calms down, with the consumer share not changing at all

this is a really good article that I think captures something that's generally underobserved — caring about consumer hardware is so unusual in modern commercial software development that it's almost stigmatized, it's generally viewed as like, the opposite of getting work done

I've semi-seriously joked for years that caring about PC parts is my worst hobby but more than that I think a lot of people in my industry genuinely would rather not have to think about non-Macs from a standardization point of view, and hobbyists are often instinctively *super* distrustful of this

I think consumer stuff really lacks an advocate, the same way that a lot of current startups are chasing B2B revenue because there's no real market for these valuations from selling to individuals. hobby microcontrollers getting a lot cheaper during the pandemic was really cool, whiplash is severe
