I don't think most Americans can conceptualize the degree of absolute economic, social and political devastation Trump has wrought upon this nation. The worst of it won't be felt for years, and it will pummel us mercilessly amidst flashpoints like midterms, or a pederast dictator's bowel movements.

I believe the United States' social fabric has been so utterly rended, our politics so terminally corrupted, our economy so hamstrung, our institutions so diluted and our discourse so polluted, it was only a matter of time before we were reduced to prisoners of fear, avarice and banality.

My generation was born during Reagan's presidency: some very rich, pale-skinned men decided our whole generation and all who followed were to be royally fucked from the moment we were pushed from our mothers' wombs. At least we had the sparkling plastic interregnum that was the 90s, I suppose . . .

Yes, perhaps in part, the old hackneyed sociopolitixal tropes of this postmodern Rome will carry on like the crusty, oil-thirsty automata of an old Chuck-E Cheese, but they will be illuminated against a backdrop that will grow more and more stark and severe with every passing day.

This is illegal. I know SCOTUS won't admit that because they are also criminals, but it is plainly illegal. The law is clear on this much: We are supposed to admit immigrants and have a process for them to gain and renew and upgrade visas.

I mean, legality is absolutely not real. It's a textbook reification / fiction treated as fact. But fascists are notoriously chickenshit in not being that bravely honest in openly admitting to that. You have to REALLY push them up against a wall before they will admit to that existentialism.

I know this is a selfish reason to resent this, but God, our science and tech are about to go down the shitter. We have relied on non-US people for innovations for a long time, and now they can't come. And for what? So they can bring back slavery? Lynchings? Fuck everything man

yeah that checks out to me. i mean they just revoked all those visas or whatever. next step is just stop new ones. it's just nativist isolationist hermit kingdom stuff. i mean not to be pessimistic but once foreign observers are gone then it's time for [redacted] camps so hey, stay sharp

In late May, the regime already started forcing foreigners to return to their home countries to apply for their green card. This new development essentially ends the first step of the legal immigration process. I am so glad I haven't filed my green card application yet. The cruelty is the point.

npr.orgTrump administration to force foreigners in the U.S. to apply for a green card abroadForeigners in the U.S. who want a green card will need to leave and apply in their home country, the Trump administration announced Friday, in a surprise change to a longstanding policy.

A friend came to the US for grad school, stayed for a postdoc, and after graduating and so changing visa status they didn't leave the US - for example, to visit their parents and childhood home - for years and years, not even for professionally advantageous meetings, because of US immigration law.

They probably would have been fine, but they didn't want to cross the border and risk it until they had their green card (which finally happened, at which point they could finally pop across the border for one of those meetings). And they're not even from a country, ethnicity, or faith Trump hates!

Telling people they have to leave the US to get a green card isn't just an expense, though it's certainly that. It's also a way of telling them they might not get back in at all.

And as I've been tracking, it's been eight months since Trump admitted a single refugee into the United States (Biden admitted 100,060 in 2024; white people from South Africa don't count.) There is now no longer a legal path for non-white people to become a U.S. permanent resident or citizen.

BREAKING: in July 2026, *every single one* of the 2,528 refugees admitted in the U.S. were white South Africans. In FY 2026, the U.S. has admitted a total of 10,255 white South Africans, three Afghans (back in November), and nobody else. For reference, the U.S. admitted 100,060 refugees in 2024.

I deleted a previous quote post to correct an error I made. If you fail to renew your *Conditional* Green Card (often through marriage or investments), you will lose your permanent residency and can be removed from the U.S. Not having a valid green card with you at all times is also a misdemeanor.

Which is ridiculous. When I’m swimming at the beach? When I’m out for a run? I never carried mine on a daily basis.

By my understanding, the pause currently only applies to immigrant visa applicants (though Reuters' wording is really unclear) However, one wrinkle in all of this is that most colleges south of the Mason-Dixon line have already begun their fall semesters, but not necessarily those in the north:

Imagine this. Young doctor, young school age family and still paying off student loans lands in US on an H1B visa. Full patient panel (about 2000 patients) and is forced to leave to apply for green card? Not coming back. That community is SOL.

We cannot wait until the next election to remove Trump from office. He's ruining the country and making our allies hate us just because of what he is doing. Congress needs to man up and stop this before it is too late.

So they are just ending all legal immigration then. This is just the GOP officially ending all avenues of legal immigration because that was always their actual goal.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: if you asked any right wing jackass to design an immigration system from scratch there's a 99.99% chance they come up with something infinitely more logical and humane than the lovecraftian eldritch horror we're currently cursed with

So becoming Amurrikkkan means conforming to the ever-shrinking parameters set by the 20ish billionaires who run the country? Enjoy your blancmange utopia. We'll be over here celebrating diversity and the benefits of learning to integrate cultural differences into a mosaic that's better for all

For $100K per visa, it’s cheaper to set up the employees elsewhere if you need them badly enough. This has got to stop, but the only thing we can do as a united nation is to get off of our butts & vote! These midterms are so important to the future of our democracy. Please!

At this point, why would anyone want a green card? Lots of other great countries in the world. If talent stops going to the US corporations might bitch or move, that's the only thing this admin would listen to.

I’m imagining Stephen Miller in hand cuffs on a flight to Mogadishu, then quickly transferred to a Somali prison where his is the only pale face. (Miller overwhelms all my instincts to be kind and find some goodness in everyone)

Respectfully I think this is incorrect? It only applies to visas and not green cards. It’s important not to panic people with pending green cards applications who might be upset by this without cause.

You get your Green Card after you successfully apply for an immigrant visa. The Green Card is proof that you are a Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States

Their goal has never been to stop illegal immigration. It's been to *completely halt* ALL immigration under the currrent rules (and let in only rich white Europeans later.) There's no point to following Stephen Miller's ethnic cleansing program if you keep allowing new immigrants in, you know.
