Conflicted over this, but happy to see that community members and maintainers are even more conflicted than I am. Just this weekend, we held our gamedev community meetup and I held a presentation about the objective drawbacks of using AI in games. It was a contentious topic, but I feel like -

Godot Engine@godotengine.org

For years we have been overwhelmed by the volume of code contributions we have to review, especially from new contributors. AI has made the problem much worse. That's why we are taking steps to reduce the burden on maintainers while still welcoming new contributors: godotengine.org/article/cont...

the group in general agreed with my stance: It's not the fact that godot is slop. It isn't, it's perfectly usable. Rather, it's the permission that them using AI implies: It gives everyone else the pass to start using AI, instead of contacting community members, joining groups -

and participating in general. AI is easy, it keeps you complacent, ignorant of all the dangers. The policy narrows the use of AI in code greatly, and certainly condemns those who would use it instead of actually interacting with humans. But it doesn't condemn it wholly, which does leave a weird -

taste in my mouth. as a new contributor, should I start using AI tools to autocomplete and do menial tasks, since the maintainers seem to use them too? Am I falling behind them? Is my human code going to be seen as slow or sluggish? what about AI research? is my human searching slow as well? -

I'll keep observing and see how the situation unfolds, I'll keep an eye on Godot 4.5.2 and 4.7, but I find it really comforting to see the community come together on this and staying resilient against the movement into AI tools. I really want to keep using godot, but I also want it to be good.

Our goal with the new policy is exactly (and explicitly!) to keep teaching new people sustainable. If that is your main concern, it is OUR main concern as well. And we've never pressured people to use any particular tool. My workflow is a tabbed terminal emulator, vim, and gdb. 😀
