for all talks of local-first AI, given controversies over datacenters, I don't think people are willing to hear that local LLM inference is *probably* less environmentally friendly than cloud inference the majority of the time.

im going to be put on a list called "datacenter defenders" or something but like. if you think the nearest datacenter is ruining the environment then your local power sources are almost definitely worse lol

even just running an ollama service, I probably waste a ton of power and time waiting for the model to load into VRAM before running inference with something like karakeep. a cloud where the model is always ready is def better.

i think that depends a lot on the hardware though i.e. a gaming laptop that's built on components that optimize performance per watt feels like it should still be more efficient even taking all the overhead into account, just because DC hardware is optimized for different variables

datacenters are definitely concerned with performance per watt! it's pretty key to profitability, they're not *trying* to maximize power usage. the way that gaming laptops achieve portability/any battery life at all is by sacrificing a great deal of performance and fidelity

ehh this seems like an unfair comparision. local LLM inference would likely use less total power because consumer grade hardware is limits the size of model that people can run. it wouldn’t be worse for the environment if more people used smaller models even if the per-watt efficiency went down.

I think you severely underestimate how much power hitting a beefy gaming GPU uses and how bad residential power grids are

local inference is about the same environmental impact as playing a video game for the same length of time, not surprisingly, because it's basically doing the same thing. concur that this is probably a bigger power draw than doing it at scale, but it helps bring the whole thing into perspective

Absolutely agree! I think there's little way around it (like basically all the efficiencies and benefits we can secure for local AI could be replicated, possibly even more effectively, in centralized systems). I think people are conflating local with small, where we could just say what we mean...

I definitely want to see more focus on local-first both for models AND for energy production through renewables, but I can't help but feel like data centers have become a kinda weird scapegoat in all this. I guess it demonstrates how much making things tangible/visible can matter for a public convo.

yeah I mean as a fellow local AI user I'm not saying there aren't reasons you'd want it! latency, reliability, privacy, etc. but it's probably not climate friendly. same as running a big media server in my closet lol
