I think it’s just horrible news that the far right is able to concentrate a lot of capital into building their own orgs so that they can bypass and effectively do a coup on institutions they dislike, not for technical reasons but because those institutions are too trans, woke, and brown.

I'd never use Omarchy (much prefer Nix/NixOS) and I *heavily* disagree with DHH's politics—but!—8 millies to a Linux "distro" is excellent news for Linux as an ecosystem over all. This is probably as good as it'll get.

I don’t agree with the current state of, say, Free desktop and such, but their first major project is to fully fund a guy developing an entire alternative ecosystem of projects because he was banned from the community for being racist and transphobic.

It’s a deliberate attempt to undermine decades of community organizing by pouncing on all its weak spots. Not to improve them, but to replace them, so that now there is a place that is oops-all-Lunduke.

It’s closely tied to people doing sustained harassment campaigns on women and trans people in FOSS. There’s no way in hell this is a good thing unless you consider your most racist coworker getting paid to shill for DHH is a good thing.

making this sort of faustian bargain for a linux distro is not something that needs to be defended at all. like, it is utterly transparent what is happening here. one does not need a ton of foresight to see where it leads.

All of that can be true, alongside the fact that this can realistically result in a net benefit to the Linux ecosystem overall. He seems hell bent on getting support for newer Macs & and a better OOTB experience over all. These efforts *are* a positive outcome. That's all my post was about.

I think you're completely and utterly deluded if you think that is more important than a huge concentration of wealth around the far right deliberately trying to replace the linux community wholesale. Anything touched by this is going to see valuable contributors leaving due to harassment.

what do you call it if they form their own self contained zone and tools and projects if not a far right linux community replacement

Having seen what’s happened to the Ruby ecosystem since DHH went full fash, nothing good can come from them having any influence in the Linux ecosystem. Best to treat it all with suspicion and not get anywhere near it.

wingnut welfare taking plays from Christian dominion types in order to build parallel social infrastructure is bad, yeah

I think if dominionists created a linux distro it would be something like a christian analogue of north korea's communist distro but omarchy somehow feels much worse than that

This is why I'm less and less a fan of open source. Not like, the ideals are fine or whatever. But genuinely just having low skill loud internet chuds steal your stuff and turn it into profitable institutions that hate you seems kind of stupid?

Also, where is the money going to go? I have a feeling that not much is going to be given to upstream projects anyways so it won't affect the ecosystem positively at all. Like will they just give Asahi Linux, freedesktop.org, the Linux kernel, quickshell, archlinux, etc, big chunks of the money?

first thing announced is 3 years of full time funding for the hyprland guy, who was banned from freedesktop lol

And... are they gonna fund any other projects outside their right-wing circle? Also so what if hyprland is banned from freedesktop they could still donate as last I checked hyprland hasn't replaced mesa or wayland yet.
