If your reaction to Wemby saying this is a hearty “hell yeah”, it behooves me to let you know that @theguardian.com does not take business from betting companies, we have a great sports section, no paywall, and a great app. www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/o...

I’m a Wolves fan and the Spurs have been a foil for my team many times over the years but I’ve always respected them and loved Pop, Duncan and The Admiral. Love Wemby too and the fact that he’s brave enough to speak out about this stuff and politics in general.

respect for drawing a clear line here. when athletes normalize betting through sponsorships, it can blur the boundary between the sport itself and the gambling ecosystem around it.

Of coarse he is speaking in front of a sign that shows Victory Capital as their main sponsor. Victory Capital is a very expensive “wealth management” company that gambles on the markets. Just sayin’

I got a Kalshi ad on my Instagram feed today, and they had a graphic with the odds on who’d win the race between Talarico and Paxton, with the question “Who do you bet will win the Texas governor’s race?” I replied, “I bet neither.” That told me all I needed to know about them. Dolts.

And better coverage of world news than any English-speaking outlet I've found. Though I do pay for it. Because I value good journalism. Even though I don't give a toss about sports coverage. Sorry. At least I do know who Wemby is.

I never see the owners and politicians take heat for supporting sports betting. Why are the players criticized but not the owners? Do we criticize alcohol advertisements? Its the selective outrage and hypocrisy that pisses me off. Rich white men are immune from media criticism

I grew up with the “Grauniad” but ended my years’ long subscription after I saw yet another opinion piece from racist trash justifying genocide in Gaza. Why should I pay for shit like that? I don’t! I switched to Byline Times instead. I like the G reminding me how many articles I’ve read for free.

I’m a Laker fan for life and really liked and appreciated Lebron James for his hard work, innate skill and ability to stay pretty drama free. I am so disappointed that he looked at his life and thought, ‘I don’t make enough money, why don’t I start promoting sports betting!’ The King has fallen.

While I was watching the MLB playoff game between Boston and NY, the commercials included sports betting companies promising to pay out big. It was an MLB approved stream. Don't tell me they don't know about it-they're ignoring it. They're making money from this shit.

The little odds lower right on Apple TV, moving a team to Vegas, I think we’re what’s coming. Wrigley Field has a huge bet shop attached to it.

And you've been instrumental in spreading bigotry and hatred in the UK to strip away the rights of vulnerable people

I’m boycotting all pro sports until I see these millionaire athletes stand up for all Americans, for democracy, human rights, women’s rights, voting rights and civil rights. Ther fortunes are made from the wallets of working class citizens. Fans would listen if they had the balls to speak up.

I was raised on The Guardian but I find the sports section to be overwhelmingly male. Stories of female athletes all too often "human interest" oriented.

It raises questions about WNBA Does old stars were receiving brown envelopes from someone before Caitlin Clark and that is the reason why all WNBA, Commissioner, owners, players and referees make her life hell ? Bets cannot be good if you don’t control the outcome anymore
