anecdotally I now have the exact opposite experience. The more I spend time outside of gaming, the less interested and engaged I feel toward games.

Of all the people I would trust the most on the subject, Itoi is the top. Heโ€™s the reason I found my career, the inspiration that has led me to reach out to every medium I can. I owe much of the success Iโ€™ve had in life to him

On comment of "Hideaki Anno, through Evangalion, told his audience to "living a fulfilling life, rather than just consuming fantasies", kure362 hits you with a wisdom nuke you can only get on JPN Twitter.

This is the truth behind the "anime was a mistake" meme from Miyazaki. People whose only or even primary engagement with joy in the world is anime will make lousy anime.

I don't often think about stagecraft except mainly for how to best light certain areas. Mainly making sure the main sprites contrast more from the BG. It's more the case w/ Blender. Though I mainly had brief experiences with studio shoots in trade school, in 11th grade. It's deff' helped.

Also photography deff' helps with learning about composition and how to take interesting shots. I'm an amature photographer; I just like taking photos around me for refs and for insperation.

The more time I spend away from the world, the more time I spend gaming, but the more I don't game, the more I engage with the world. It's just balance.

While this quote made a lot of sense in its context, in an era where the scope and capabilities of games were extremely limited especially in their ability to capture the appeal of other mediums, I think wholesale adopting this idea does undersell what games have become.

It's easy to harp on an imaginary developer for the imaginary crime of not consuming enough niche or "outside media" (with the definition of outside media usually changing to include the special niche interest of the one reflecting on the quote...)

It does feel a little moot in an era where it's just as easy to access a PDF of ancient Chinese literature as it is to access a 50 hour indie CRPG released the same week. If you treat niche interests like something to be collected...

Then I feel like your engagement with media is going to end up just as shallow as someone who didn't care to look outside their comfort zone in the first place. I think nowadays it's more important to follow what inspires you, instead of trying to accommodate some invisible "balanced media diet."

This is also true of cinema, music, art, etc, though. It's not about how limited games are or what they've become, it's that if you only draw inspiration and appreciation from one medium or realm of art, you're only seeing the discourses/trends within it, and missing out on a wider perspective.

Tezuka said it about making comics, and I think Mamoru Oshii said it about making cartoons

This is more or less why I keep tabs with sports as a whole. I like the narratives that surround a particular team or game and it's super easy to get invested in just cause it's something different and fresh. Also sports memes are esoteric, mean, and funny as hell.

having been in a slump of not being able to play most games this lightens my heart full of discontent i may not be enjoying sitting with these activities but i can see it as a show of my soul seeking fulfillment elsewhere

this is y i fw itoi even if his games never rly landed for me, he was treating games as art pieces before any of us, even the staunchest defenders of "games as art", understood what he was up to
