Well, it finally happened! After 9 years of Unity dominance, Godot was the most used game engine for GMTK Game Jam 2026 submissions. 🤖 Godot - 47% 🎮 Unity - 34% 🛠️GameMaker - 5% 🚀 Unreal Engine - 3% ✨ Other - 11%

That's great news, not least because a >50MB download for a game made in a long weekend is clearly ridiculous.

Godots build sizes have been steadily increasing but thats to be expected with more and more features I guess. Its now a 76MB ZIP download (4.7.1) and 138MB binary size unpacked

I built a game a couple of weeks ago and the export zipped to about 40MB. It'll grow as the engine does, for sure, but I do think if it hits the size of an empty Unreal Engine project we'll have lost something valuable

but the awesome part of godot being godot is you can (with a bit of extra effort) remove parts of the engine you don't need, e.g. if your game is entirely 2d you can just not include the 3D part of the engine in your game! (docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tu... for those curious)

docs.godotengine.orgUsing the engine compilation configuration editorGodot comes with a large set of built-in features. While this is convenient, this also means its binary size is larger than it could be, especially for projects that only use a small portion of its...

I love that this is an option, although I can't imagine anyone much uses it? I use Godot precisely because I *don't* care enough about adding 20MB of download to figure out how to compile a cross-platform C++ project, if I did I'd make my own engine
