I didn't need a therapist to tell me to cut off my parent. All it took was a friend telling me how she was always emotionally drained after visiting her parents and always felt like she was walking on eggshells. It opened my eyes that I deserved better than that

I cut my parents off because they're both magats, and once you realize your parent would have been a Nazi in 1938 Germany, you just can't see them the same way.

Thank you. It is. We were very close for most of my life, especially Mother. Journaling has helped enormously in working through my emotions. You're very kind.

"1/3 of parents believe ..." is not fact-based evidence. I know several parents whose kids are estranged because they are lousy parents, in spite of them claiming they were great at raising their children. Also, I'm certain the Miller spawn will seek therapy at some point.

I love it. Therapists are for helping people understand problems. If Musk has problems with his children, then perhaps he could address those issues with the person, maybe in family therapy. Let your kids be, Elon.

I went NC with Father in 2019, after my third and final attempt to work on our issues, where I suggested we use a therapist or mediator. He said nah, he's good. So technically, I guess he chose NC, he just didn't think I'd follow thru.

You are correct. It told me everything. Thank you. 😊 My husband and our 2 adult children are incredibly supportive. I count my blessings daily.

And the answer is: no parents are responsible for children cutting off contact. People need to realise they are responsible for their relationships. If you are horrible then they are not required to stay in contact with you.

I cut my parents out of my life when my mother told my wife she didn’t care if she died as long as she got another grand kid out of it (Drs had told my wife a 2nd pregnancy would be fatal) And after she screamed at my kid for 45 mins because of a schedule foul up I didn’t need therapy

Too much wealth and power reduces empathy. There is research to back it. Even the perception of having power can make a person sadistic. The powerful/super wealthy person dehumanises everyone weaker. But also, I think, there must've been something wrong with such person in the first place.

When reality bites your ass as a parent, and your kids won't talk to you, blaming the therapist is the biggest deflection and rationalization of all. "Couldn't be me, could it? Impossible! It's those damn therapists, stirring up trouble."

I want to get in on the random societal atropy bandwagon too! "Every year, more and more people are liking the Starwars Prequelogy over the TrilOGy. This is how countries fall apart. It's only a matter of time before people start unironically saying Rey was well written and nuanced character."

Ethical therapists do not tell people to cut people out of their lives. However, the work done in therapy may help people realize they do not want to tolerate abusive behaviours from someone and then choose no contact.

My dad(92) told me the other day that my sister, who has mental health problems, was in therapy. Again. His main worry? That she might say(lie) to the therapist that he had been very 'authoritarian'. I looked him dead in the eye: "But you were authoritarian" He quit the subject.

Nobody goes low/no contact for shits and giggles, it happens after a long, long time of terrible behaviour. And ya know what? These parents are only embarrassed that their shittiness didn't stay behind closed doors, not their actual words and actions. Also: Musk and Miller are both hot garbage.

I cut my mother off when she started to tell people I was faking epilepsy, she decided her PhD in health and social care meant she was qualified to. I have a clinical diagnosis, thanks to my neuro not liking that my mother was doing that. She kept testing till we got the positive EEG

The beginning of my escape from my mom's control: she demanded to sit in on a session with my therapist so she could say what I was and was not allowed to discuss. Next session, therapist gave me some options, one of which changed my life, but the big thing was an adult agreeing I needed to escape.

This is not a criticism of you, just the meme. The first part is perfect, but I find the phrases "let that sink in" and "think about it" really annoying. They imply the listener is too stupid to understand without rumination.

My father once, in a drunken rage, told me he was "going to spend [my] inheritance and leave [me] with nothing." I calmly replied "It's your money, do whatever you like with it." It was not the fawning acquiesce he'd been expecting and obviously surprised him. He was embarrassed the next day.

Maybe be a decent parent and treat your child like a person who is allowed to be themselves and they will stay in contact. Worked with my mom and I when I didn't become a scientist and turned out too asexual and broke to have kids of my own.

I will continue to say this. Cutting family off is as old as family. What's new is we all openly discuss it. In 1989 when we found out my uncle had a whole ass other family I didn't go to school and tell everyone. We kept that shit a secret because it was shameful.

maybe it's just me but every shitty boomer I ever heard blames all their shitty behaviours on their shitty parents as it it's some valid excuse for them being shitty but oh if you should cut them off for being shitty so you don't become shitty too, that's a problem is it??
