Wow…reading this was quite the trip down memory lane. I started writing for RPGamer in January 2000, followed by getting my first “job” in the games industry in 2001, with paid work starting in 2003. I left in 2021, after 20 years of freelancing; acquiring, balancing, & billing clients got brutal.

I’ve since meandered thru romantasy and into MM romance - I love to read it as well as work on it. I can’t fix your plot holes (tho I will note them, he didn’t take his shirt off but now we see his chest?), but I can address your comma splices and/or your narrator saying dais & viscount wrong.

It also isn’t steady work (and I’m too sick now to work full time anyways), but it is sooooooooooo much less stressful and I’m still doing something I love (PS: hire me to proof your gay & lesbian romance novels lol) I was kinda surprised how portable skills were. Figured I’d have to start anew!

I have said a few times to people still in the industry I feel like I left at the exact right time; the writing really was on the wall. In some ways, RPGamer (which we’ve now owned for almost 12 years) being entirely volunteer run saved the site. If we had to be proftiable? LOL. We’d be so dead.

I did end up using a lot of the skills I developed in the games industry as I pivoted. I spent a couple years teaching people how to be community managers, mostly in the crypto space (*ducks the flying rocks*), then pivoted to proofreading followed by prooflistening creature fantasy.

This was also before I transitioned to male, so there was also the additional mental load of mandatory emotional labour for clients, as well as increasingly pervasive and hostile harassment. Yes, men in gaming get crapped on, but it’s comparing pineapples to apples. They’re different underneath.

Class disparity romcoms can be really hit or miss for me; both sides of the equation can be written in a doubtful way. This one’s hitting a good balance and I am guffawing frequently.

There was a line from an urban legend when I was a kid that read "She has become as she was always meant to be." I think about it a lot when I look back at who I was and who I am now. Transition, gryphons, fighting for human rights. I was a scared child, then I became who I was always meant to be.

Would you like to support a trans male author AND get a bunch of books? Do you like romance? Historical fiction? Disabled representation? Humour? Sex? I've got it all, baby! For just £12 you can get a starter pack of 10 eBooks to get you started reading my work: johannestevans.co.uk/product/joha...

Finished the Spencer Bros trilogy over the last week. Alexander Cedense is a good narrator when you need something chillax…but I kinda like him best doing dual narrations. First one should still be in Audible Plus.

The narration for this series is TRULY excellent. Was a first time narrator for me, and now I seek his work out. Grab the digital version on sale, then WhisperSync the audio. Cheaper than an audible credit.

Reminder to get your flu and COVID shots to protect yourself and your neighbors this respiratory illness season! I picked a day next week to get mine. I have to plan a bit carefully because my fibromyalgia likes to punish me for it. 😭 Still worth it, it would punish me for flu or COVID too.

I am very very curious how this came about. Also will be interesting to see a retranslation.

I have a few moots in the DC area - if you or someone you know can help out Glenn, even if it’s just for a few days, I would be super grateful.

K. Vale Nagle@kvalenagle.bsky.social

Do I have any mutuals in DC who could house Glenn (my spouse) for two weeks? His actual housing there starts in two weeks, but he was approved to work from here (Denver) until then and that was just withdrawn so he needs to fly to DC tomorrow and find a bed to sleep on for two weeks =/

We both had a serious gigglefit when we realize she was sitting in her living room shirtless with one sock on, BUT we got it done.

I needed a dress and shoes overnighted for an emergency, and @pawsrpg.bsky.social sat with me on the phone while we figured it out like a true friend. Though he kept being like "quick, take off your shirt and measure your bust size" and "how long are your feet." But in between that, dress acquired!

When I reviewed Cat Quest II, I put “you can play as a cat” in the pros, and “you can play as a dog” in the cons. I *still* get people messaging me about it, SEVEN YEARS LATER, to complain. It’s an easy way to tell who read the intro paragraph vs who skipped to score! rpgamer.com/review/cat-q...

one of the more embarrassing strangely common video game fandom behaviours is holding onto resentment over specific IGN reviews decades later. you are 29 years old bro you gotta led the sonic unleashed review go

“Never ignore your roots — your home or your hair.” I’m not much of a country music person, but I’ve been listening to Dolly Parton my entire life. 9 to 5 was one of the earliest movies I ever saw - we rewatched it regularly on our Betamax. Her philanthropy has/will touch many lives. RIP Dolly.

I feel like these kinds of “inevitable!!” folks miss that while Gen Alpha has high adoption (65-85% depending on the study - because they’ve really not lived in a world without GenAI), they have low trust in it (80% of Gen A GenAI users trust humans more and/or verify any factual statements given)

Matt Gabriele@profgabriele.com

Extremely tired of people who profit from this telling the rest of the world that it’s inevitable and no you’re the myopic one

The squishy border between Gen Z and Gen A (15-18/19) have very strong opinions on which GenAI is cool, good to use, acceptable vs what is Not Those Things™️ Most of it is what the “inevitable” crowd wants to do with it, too - art and writing. YA fiction already phasing out GenAI covers & authors.

GenAI assisted procedural generation and linter, maybe spelling and grammar tools built on LLMs, are here to stay until the C-suite stops getting blowies from GenAI companies. After the bubble pops, will even that stick around? We’ll see?
