Controllers, importantly, work for the public, not the airlines. They can’t accept free flight privileges or even a box of oranges at Christmas from airlines. That’s how it must be bc the FAA regulates and inspects airports, airlines, pilots, and mechanics. No conflicts of interest allowed.

ATC is really very difficult and demanding work. You spend hours and hours looking at multiple screens so as to best avoid pilot error crashes. You really can't take you eyes off the screens much at all and must be relieved to go to the bathroom. Spend some time in a tower or other control center !
