Trump: “Canada disinvited the US to the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge, which is fine, considering they are paying substantial TARIFFS, but the original Deal on the Bridge, which was terribly negotiated by a previous Administration, no longer stands. We changed terms so that the US now gets 50%”

Orang idiot, my man, get over it. The bridge is a joint venture between Michigan and Canada. Just let go, the bridge is desperately needed.

Every time Dear Leader makes one of these ridiculous declarations, it just makes me think of Michael Scott standing outside his office door shouting, "I declare bankruptcy!"

Canada paid 100% of construction costs, 50% of labor hired was from US, Canada was to get 100% of toll revenues until cost was recovered then split 50/50 with US. Trump demanded 50% of tolls right away as requirement to let completed bridge open. That is dishonest and reneging on a deal.

When he says it's fine, it's not fine, which is fine. No Trump, Hoekstra, Bessent, Hassett, Lutnick the Nutlick, Navarro or Greer means the wine should be flowing. Any party is better minus these twats. I hope Gretchen Whitmer is invited, tho'.

We didn't pay on cent of the cost of that bridge but the fat man always sees a way to wet his beak. You can bsure that he sees some of that toll money ending up in his or his kids pockets. I think I read that Canada told him that when the cost of the bridge is recovered they will consider a split.

I read somewhere that there are no "profits" to be had. Tolls will be going to pay off the cost of the bridge that Canada paid for. As usual, DJT is a liar and taking credit for stuff he has nothing to do with.

And I am buying 0% of US liquor and any other US items I can't find any Canadian/non-US substitutes for (like contact lens solution) not just for Trump's term, but likely for the rest of my life. And I live in Alberta, where our feckless premier gave up on the US liquor ban after only 3 months.

I can’t wait for the day that we don’t have to read or hear about this guy. We all deserve that peace. It’s been a LONG 10 years for America.

Canada paid for the bridge. Trump refused to allow it to open because a friend of his had a bridge nearby. The US shouldn't get a penny, but Canada acquiesced to Trumpian demands just to get the f-ing bridge open. And Americans wonder why Canadians now distrust, even hate, America/

If I’m not mistaken, that is the original deal. Canada paid for it, will collect 15 years worth of tolls to reimburse itself the original investment and Michigan owns half.

I suspect he means revenue. Given the cost of the bridge (6.4b Canadian) and the expected revenue (130m Canadian) it will be 50 years before there are any profits to take 50% of. I'm not surprised that he doesn't know the difference.

Trump tore up the agreement that got this bridge built. No country anywhere can trust any agreement made with the US under the Trump Regime. Even CUSMA is being tossed aside and Trump signed it. No deals are possible with this regime.

💯 Gordie Howe International Bridge was financed entirely by the Canadian government at a cost of roughly $4.4 billion to $6.4 billion (CAD 6.4 billion) and faced fierce opposition from the billionaire Moroun family, who privately own the competing Ambassador Bridge in the Detroit-Windsor corridor.

If I were PM Carney, I'd not open the Gordie Howe Bridge and close the Ambassador Bridge until the original deal is restored and the additional tariffs are gone.

Canada not only paid 100% of the Gordie Howe bridge construction, but also paid 100% to build the customs area on the US side of the bridge. Even so - Canada STILL offered to split the revenue 50/50, after the cost of construction was paid. And the Americans turned that down. FREE MONEY.

Now that we've established the principle that international contracts can be chucked whenever one side feels like it has leverage, Canada can do the same thing when we finish restructuring our trade relationships. Wonder what we can do with energy & mineral export arrangements?

My understanding from up here (🇨🇦) was that we decided not to go but have our own on the Canada side. But of course the truth certainly never matters to this buffoon. 🙄

So our very own GreedyGut cut the state of Michigan out of the deal? The state was supposed to share revenues after Canada recouped construction costs.

USA (not just MAGA) is using every excuse to train their base to hate Canada. If you can't deal with Iran, you will never win against Canada with our war-face on. We are hard, cold, and angry now. Hurt us further and USA people will be starving in the dark. That's the consensus view up here now.

I mean, I just hope we don't greet truck traffic like we usually do - with some horrific backup on I-75 because the whole stretch between downtown and the Rouge River is fucked from a design standpoint. In all seriousness though, pretty sure he can't change Michigan's deal.

He left out the part that the 50% is for 15 years, during which time interest accues. Canada still gets their entire investment repaid, plus now gets more interest. Ask any bank if they have a problem with you extending your mortgage or temporarily halving your payments. They love it.

Maybe he's trying to start a war near the US - or among his own citizens within the US - so he can declare Martial Law by the midterms? I mean - no one can read this without thinking, "Them's fightin' words!"

Oh, he knows exactly how they work, just chooses to ignore them. Ask any of the small business owners and contractors he screwed over during his time as the grandest real estate poobah in the world.

Did Trump get played? If they count loan service and recovery of initial investment in "profit", the deal is no different than the original one.
