I’m hearing from friends in Alberta that today is actually hitting folks pretty hard. Not the vote to remain, which was a relief, but the other 9 questions.

I'm finally relieved to see the leader of a Federal party acknowledge just how vile, disturbing, and successful Danielle Smith and her US master's grievance games have been for them. They won 8 or the 9.

I didn't wait for the final numbers, but that they won any is a travesty in Canada in 2026. Winning the big one IMO is like when the US elected Obama. I expect further political retrenchment.

Thank you. All the media and all the coverage I'm seeing is ignoring the racist stupidity of the yes votes on eight of the nine other questions. It's a disgrace. And an egregious attempt at power grabbing and privatization of our health care. No support from Carney on that at all.

No is leading on 6-9 bsky.app/profile/sqir...

Alberta Referendum: They are still counting, but it is close on the other 9 questions. Because they counted 10 first, they are further behind on the other 9. Most areas yet to be counted are urban, more likely to vote NO to the 9. The nine are thus not called. Could all go No

it is also an indictment of the opposition's ability to combat gutter racism and leading questions, frankly. we have to be more willing to reject the premise of these bigots

It's more like privileged people doing privileged people shit. It just so happens here that is associated with whiteness. It's a pity we are not able to differentiate the two.

Thank you for addresssing the distressed feelings for those in Alberta that do care about others. But this isn’t just an Alberta problem, it’s a Canada problem. Racism spreads like a virus and no province is safe from the mindset.

Home care workers. Long term care workers. Resort workers. Meat packing plant workers. Many have work permits and visas. Researchers and grad students with families. Their children won’t be allowed in school let alone a doctors office Min wage job workers can’t afford this Then our refugees!

It’s becoming clear that the feeling of unity suggested by the referendum result is undercut by majority support for questions which feature policies that scapegoat migrants.

But no amount of punching down by Danielle Smith will fix Alberta’s health care, public education or cost-of-living crises. These are the consequences of years of underfunding, not of newcomers trying to build a life in that beautiful province.

Albertans deserve real solutions to the crises they face, not scapegoating that divides us and fuels prejudice. Right now, all Canadians have an opportunity to reject this and say: we stand with migrants facing the brunt of this cynical, negative politics.

A united Canada must mean more than just rejecting separation. It must mean actually standing up for all of us — building a movement across our differences to make this a country where everyone can live a life of dignity, equality and belonging.

I mean, I always knew the province is being run by xenophobic bigots, but seeing that, statistically, about half of everybody I might see on the street is thinking "Go back where you came from" and "We don't want you here" is not all that much fun, no

Well, that would be about half of everybody who voted, which is far less than the population of Alberta. The rest of us despise them - we know that the vast majority of Albertans descended from immigrants. A minority seem not to have learned anything from their ancestors. The rest of us welcome you.

I think part of the problem is that for a low / medium information voter, the separation question was pretty clear, while some (though not all) of the other nine were not as clear. I’ve also noted the irony of New Democrats campaigning *against* abolishing the Senate.

Fuck that. It’s not low / medium information voter. It’s selfish, petty and vindictive voter. Notice on opt out of Federal programs, the vote was no - because it might affect them directly and adversely.

And BC isn't looking much better considering the Conservatives appear to be leading in the polls. There's some seriously maleducted, misinformed, false-conscious motherfuckers out there. And growing by the day. From Facebook to FOX "News." Dumbing down at an all-time high.

I saw the actual number of votes for the other questions, which were far lower. I feel like it may be skewed in favour of those who voted yes on them, as opposed to those who simply didn't vote on them at all

I’m appalled that nearly half a million people who voted on the separation question chose not to vote on many of the other questions. Do they not understand that abstention means voting for the majority decision? Had they bothered to vote, the results could be quite different.
