What’s the deal with mastodon these days? Has it been losing ground to bluesky? Does it have a different position on the ideological spectrum? It seems likely that one of them will wind up as the default left-of-center Twitter alternative.

non-tech people found the UX of federation unacceptable and bounced off it. Nowadays a lot of it is people *deliberately* writing for a niche audience, recognizing that the "public square" is here. (at least, *I* use it when I want things seen by fewer people who understand more niche references.)

Bluesky seems to have attracted a large portion of the people for whom Mastodon was a little bit too technically weird and was missing features (like search and retweets and a customizable algorithmic feed) that they valued

A couple of years ago many in the Mastodon community pushed back hard against the idea of implementing global search because of the potential for it to be used for abuse (to help abusive users find people talking about specific subjects)

Honestly I think the biggest difference is that the Mastodon community made it very clear that they did not WANT to be the new Twitter, in terms of being a worldwide water cooler Bluesky wants to be that

Agreed. I tried it for a few months, but the user experience was not a good match for my social media use. I'm here primarily for fun, everything doesn't need to be THAT serious/complex. Bluesky is so easy to personalize and control.
