to know where you are going, you have to know where you have been: pldb.kirancodes.me Titles and abstracts of 22,324 programming languages papers, from the first POPL in 1973 to this year's proceedings.
Places I hung out with my friends as a teen: - the local college campus - Dennys - Dunkin Donuts - inefficient coffee shops - inefficient college diner - bookstore cafe All spaces built for other purposes staffed by service workers that were probably too big and expensive to run profitably.
Anthropomorphization is in fact an extremely useful tool for understanding and working with AI systems.
The new line all the anti-AI obsessives are adopting is that it's dangerous to "anthropomorphize" AI. What they mean by that is that if you use a colloquial term that accurately describes what they're doing - thinking, hacking, making autonomous decisions - they'll tell you to stop.

We also dive into Racket, programming language design, and Shriram’s decades of experience thinking about how we teach people to reason about programs. A fascinating conversation! ▶️ https://twp.ai/4hvacX 3/3

The ICFP 2026 Programming Contest will run from July 24th to July 27th. We'll get icfpcontest2026.com updated with more information on the contest in the coming weeks :)
I think the SpaceX valuation seems ridiculous, but the reason I invest in index funds is precisely not to make decisions about what individual stocks are a good investment, instead investing in all the big companies. Also, I'm not at all confident that the stock price is going to go down.
"If all goes well for SpaceX next week, Musk could very well be the world’s first trillionaire, at least on paper, thanks to large ownership stakes in two companies that, taken together, make less than zero profit." prospect.org/2026/06/10/e...

1961: CACM publishes Tony Hoare's quicksort algorithm. 2026: CACM publishes a self-promo article by some random guy who's pitting different LLMs against each other to pump unmitigated slop into a GitHub repo. Is this what my membership money's going toward, @acm.org?
The most important question in computer security is whether memory safety is the main problem and things will get better when C is in the ground, or if similar-scale problems will keep appearing.
In a CRA webinar last week, I commented it is possible that C/C++ are a per se CRA violation, since C/C++ are insecure by design. An attendee replied "but C/C++ is what embedded use" and I said, more or less, "tough". Here's @gregkh.bsky.social on it: www.zdnet.com/article/rust...
Reading this Wikipedia page, it's hard to escape the feeling that no one at all in the entire country really believes in anything the way Soule, or any of the abolitionists, did.
one of the best white boys to do it was Silas Soule who was an abolitionist in bloody Kansas, served in the Union Army, abstained from Sand Creek, testified against Chivington, and was murdered on the streets of Denver for his courage.
No actually I personally waited for hours in line to see TPM on opening day with all my huge Star Wars nerd friends and we didn't like it.
if you remember hating TPM as a kid - which I do too! - you probably had a dad or older brother who told you you were supposed to hate it because he did (that happened to me!)
The problem with this analysis is that the American constitutional order really does rely on a lack of polarization to function, and especially to function in a way that makes meaningful changes that those of us on the left want This is a bad thing but that and $4 will get you a cup of coffee.
Given the argument that ended the VRA, I think it’s time liberals did some self reflection about the now decades long obsession with partisan polarization as the problem, as opposed to authoritarianism, extremism, oligarchy, and racism

Obviously the decline in trust in elite institutions has multiple causes, but one of them is just that our institutions have broadly become less trustworthy, and fixing this will require them to change. @chrislhayes.bsky.social wrote a whole book about this.

A central problem everywhere is that people want a formula or shortcut around "you just have to be good", but there isn't one, for movies or politics or buildings or software or anything else.
I don't quite agree with this framing, and I say this as a Let That Be Your Last Battlefield defender. It could definitely be flatly preachy at times. I think that it's really just a skill issue, if your preaching is sufficiently inspiring and the stories It features in sufficiently engaging is ok.
Requiring elementary school students to actually memorize their multiplication tables: good Comparing math standards based on word count: wtf?
Math, with its black-and-white rules and rigid structure, might seem to be beyond politics. But right-leaning education advocates are now pushing new model math standards.

It's important to think about what work the claim "Crash Bandicoot is political" is doing in a conversation, and that work is usually supporting the claim "now I get to yell at you about Crash Bandicoot".
nearly wrote a long explanation of why one can agree with the general sentiment "all art is political" or even the more ambitious "everything is political" while also thinking that the sense in which Crash Bandicoot is political is different from the sense in which the Communist Manifesto is
The basic problem in American politics is that everyone thinks that undeserving others of various kinds actually consume an outsized proportion of production, and that this could be redistributed to everyone else cost-free.
The problem with slopulism is that it always tends toward “you, the saintly innocent voter, and anyone who is even vaguely sympathetic to you, will not have to change anything or sacrifice anything, just the Bad People”. Which is an easy sell at the ballot box but bad when it’s time to govern.
I built a new thing: samth.github.io/rackup/ It's an installer and toolchain manager for @racket-lang.org. It works on Mac and Linux, it lets you install any release including from 1996, and it features all the latest bells and whistles. Also it was built almost 100% using AI.
Dad's side: started a freight forwarding company (which I think was just him). Mom's side: HS football coach, printed products salesman/manager/executive.
Whether or not you’re running for Congress and trying to seem rugged (and you probably should run, because, look who’s out there) what did your grandpas do for a living?
