Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

We wiped out smallpox, developed vaccines for most childhood diseases, developed mRNA vaccines, developed immune therapies for cancer, cleaned up a bunch of rivers, cleaned up the air (these last two are under attack now though), eliminated leaded gasoline and paint.

Unleaded gasoline was a progressive rollout and I got to see that as an ongoing thing during the 90s. Air cleanup also happened in Mexico City during my lifetime: it’s not perfect, but the current “contingency: bad air” levels these days are where an average day AQI was in the 80s/90s.
