Sorry to say you are off by one day. October 26, 1856 was a Sunday. The inaugural Grand Trunk Railway through trains between Toronto and Montreal ran the next day, Monday, October 27.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia?
Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right.
Don't appease.
Don't triangulate.
Don't grovel.
Don't say they have "legitimate concerns".
Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

This really is so weird and bad. Say I make a post and someone replies to argue with me. They can then block everyone who provides counterpoints to them and no one will see those replies in the thread.
Like, there's an argument for the thread author having that power, but this just seems wrong
One insane aspect of blocking on here is if you reply to someone in the replies of a post, and your counterpoint (agreeing with OP) showed them up, they can block you and that keeps their reply up but hides yours. Yes they blocked me for this reasonably diplomatic post lol:
On a related note, King Street in Kitchener should be closed to cars all the time, not just when there are street festivals; it makes no sense as a thoroughfare for anything but bikes and pedestrians.
Thought it might help to stop and glare from the sidewalk at some drivers who were looking down at their phones. It didn’t — they didn’t notice, of course
me: writing a prompt that went viral on sharing good things
also me: trying really hard not to respond to the grumpy reactions that make up less than 1% of that post’s engagement
Hello to my new followers! I regret to inform you that my regular posts are less positive and more esoteric than what probably brought you here. Don’t forget that it is OK to unfollow too
I can create a building out of gingerbread. That was possible before my lifetime, but:
- I can research buildings and find plans on the internet
- I can 3D model the building and print construction templates
- I can text photos to @joelleondanis.bsky.social for construction/material help
There used to be a bunch of days every summer when everyone was told to stay inside because of smog. Then Ontario closed its coal plants and that stopped happening!
Imagine driving on this obviously residential street in such a way that you turn left and hit a woman walking with five children
Imagine being a person responsible for law enforcement and making excuses for that driver to the media
Truly shocking case of car brain at Durham Regional Police on display regarding the horrific case of a motorist and her vehicle striking a daycare teacher and five young children in Oshawa on Wednesday.

I thought the story about a 1,711-pound pumpkin that was disqualified from the "biggest pumpkin" contest at Port Elgin's Pumpkinfest couldn't get any better.
But now it's going to be fed to polar bears.

My latest: Ukraine’s Starshield access is still crippled, no-one is taking the blame, and Ukrainian soldiers and civilians are dying because of it.

Repeating myself but find it utterly demoralizing how commonplace and deeply pervasive racism is online now. As soon as I step outside of Bsky, it’s everywhere.
Missed this last week: Brendan Kennedy at the Star reported that iGaming, the government agency responsible for online gambling, secretly shelved a research study intended to track rates of problem gambling in Ontario when those rates were much higher than expected. www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...
