Sometimes I think about this Atari 7800 homebrew. The most impressive game on the console, nothing else comes close. Imagine if this had come out during the actual era!

I forgot to mention that it's truly something special. It feels good to play and keeps throwing curveballs. My 1P runs don't get too far (skill issue). My biggest point of advice is for players new to classic Atari like the 7800 to realize how easy it is to accidentally reset the game.

It does have a custom sound chip, so it's like Castlevania III in that regard. And it sounds great! Penguinet also made one of the more impressive Lynx games, an air zonk-like (of all things!) called Zaku

Me seeing "Super Fighter Team" and opening up 10 new tabs to investigate because Super Fighter was a memorably bad game. (They are listed as the publisher of Zaku on the Penguinet site)

It also has a more Japanese feel than most Atari 7800 games, even though it wasn't designed in Japan. You get big Capcom and Namco vibes when you play it, and that design ethos is kind of refreshing on this format.

It's a very modular system design, as I recall. Need more RAM? Add it to the cart. Need a better sound chip? Add it to the cart. I don't know if the same thing can be done with the 5200, but it seems like that could open the door to all the recent XL/XE homebrews, like Street Fighter II.

I always heard Atari fans say the 7800 could do as impressive games as the NES if used properly but I’d never quite believed it since none of the official games lived up to the promise. This one made me a believer. It’s stunning!
