I watched the talk the other night for the first time, and I was tearing up right alongside you. Thank so much for sharing this incredible story! It has happily been living rent-free in my head since, and I have told my partner we need to watch it together soon. This write-up was the icing on the 🎂.

I work in historic preservation and adaptive reuse and that's from bringing old hotels back to life to DJing old music to editing a lost Rosetta Stone cocktail book from Vegas. The story is so charming and shows a complex intersection of capitalism, art, American history, preservation. Thank you.

i’m late to the game here at finding this, but thank you. unexpected and what i needed to hear

it was! he would hand paint different murals to match / reference the different areas — so you probably saw a different but still really nice one

I was at the bar, so I had to spoil the video by defying you and reading the post first. Just finished the video. Fantastic work, Cabel.

...a couple of summers ago a friend and I were briefly stuck on an Amtrak train in Centralia... We (too) were on our way to Seattle. The train was on fire but they wouldn't let us get off cuz that would have been dangerous? Anyway, out the window of the train we saw a tantalizing tractor museum...

I was really hoping the secret message under the mural was going to be "delicious burger" and that the new delicious burger was put there as a tribute to Wes

Taking your advice and "sending the nice email" - what a great talk! I love it when people fall down a rabbithole entirely. To add to your collection, I found Wes in his 1948 high school yearbook, when he was president of the art club.

My art historian father, who has been in some fights for preserving historic buildings, was delighted by the original talk. Thrilling to learn more about the story.

I watched last night and haven’t had that emotional low-high in a long time. Delicious Burger… 🥺. “Oh no f-ing way!!” 🙌🫡 Didn’t realize I needed to hear that last night. Thanks for putting that out into the world.

Even though I saw the talk back when it happened, something just occurred to me while reading this: How did you hang the mural without damaging it?

excellent question. The mural was obviously designed to be incredibly bulletproof — i think there are many many layers of varnish, to protect from mustard stains and children — so the extremely intense stage clamps didn’t really hurt it! (i think we put some towels under them too just in case)
