A commitment to MUCH higher population density would be necessary. Most have really low density and not very great prospects for infill development. The highest walkshed populations are Calvine, Jefferson, Bond Rd, and Roseville, and all would be mid-tier BART stations.
I've been attempting to articulate a philosophy that CA is sort of moving toward, which is building an overlay of dense, walkable transit station areas that are interconnected by fast-enough rail. If the communities can commit to building 15-20k housing units near these stops, great, build it!
Additional context for this vision:
- 15 min, all day clockface service on the core line
- Phases 1 and 2 are on existing ROW with the exception of the last leg of the airport extension
- fast, zero-emissions electric vehicles
I NEED THIS!!! This is awesome.
Definitely a lot of redundant freight rail infrastructure in the Sac area that could be used for this & through-running for HSR later on.
Plus, HSR will skip most of these towns in your map, so connecting them via feeders/easy transfers = positive network effects.
3 ideas for extensions: 1 - Extend Suisun/Fairfield to Napa Jct/Vallejo ferry. It connects the North Bay to the state, relieves traffic on 80 & 12, and unlocks transfers to SMART & SF (via ferry).
This is what Capitol Corridor should do anyways, IMO, b/c of Carniquez bridge issues.
One of the proposed alternatives for replacing the Carquinez bridge on the CC is to go via Napa Junction and Vallejo then cross parallel to I-80. It's also probably the best one and is roughly the same track distance.
2 - Truckee/Reno. With some upgrades, we can have regular service from Sac to Truckee & Reno, especially useful during tourist seasons, relieving traffic on 80. The tracks go right next to Soda Springs, Sugar Bowl, and Donner Ski Ranch, for example.
3 - Selfishly, I would love to see rail service from Yuba City extended to Grass Valley someday via 20, or the resurrection of the Colfax - GV route, which is now 174. Even if it's just 2x daily service, it's still a good model to follow for integrating smaller towns/tourist destinations.
I also have 4 Capital Corridor trains to Auburn (plus Zephyr and LA-Reno train), and 2 to Redding (both Redding, 2 Capitals continuing to Salinas). Gold Runner also sends 2rts beyond Natomas to Redding. These also serve Marryville in add. to Chico
$8 a gallon gas plus a VMT or more paid parking. I love this vision! I would possibly put another station on the UP mainline between I-80 and the Galleria. Maybe BRT on Roseville Parkway between the 2 stations
I don’t know what frequency used to be like for southern Pacific, but I my grandmother used to take the train from Roseville to downtown Sacramento to go to department stores in the 1950s. Now Roseville is the real serious regional shopping destination.
Honestly I've considered whether it would be possible even to go beyond Placerville. You'd likely be building along much of the US50 row since modern passenger equipment can handle the grades so the only real obstacle is the last ridge before Meyers. Tunnel under Echo anyone? 😆
