I'd like to know what Robert Danton has to say about this. So far as I know his Great Cat Massacre claimed this as an episode in early modern French history, not the middle ages. I think Internet sages have mangled this to make it medieval because, well, that's where superstition lives, innit?

Not really, in the 1980s there´s been some Satanic group here in our region, when also our black Bombay mix Mutz disappeared, aged 4, around #Halloween of 1989. We´d only adopted him about 2 years before...

8 of my last 10 cats have been black. And the only sacrifices made by them were mice and an occasional pigeon. Anyone who thinks black cats are evil or witch's familiars are dumbasses.

Thank you for this message! I used to keep my black cat (indoor/outdoor, but I was a kid in the 80s and didn't know better) inside on Halloween. We had some great pix of her with me when I was dressed up as a witch, though...

I don't let my black cat out at night on Halloween (or any other night) because they are impossible to find under the neighbor's bushes in the dark.

I adopted my void kitty because A) She chose me and B) she'd been in the shelter going on 2 years because she's a black cat (and has sinusitis). She is currently trying to help me post.

There's always some people who believe in it, but it surges when evangelicals feel their hierarchies are threatened The Satanic Panic of the 1980s was backlash to Roe v Wade & the increasing # of women in the workplace It flared up again as backlash to MeToo & a female presidential candidate

Very interesting. Cats peeing on books, cats catching mice, cats keeping old ladies company. Seems that hasn't changed. Hope the plague thing stays away!

Angus shows me that he loves me by bringing in semi-dead beasties, & dropping them on my face as I sleep, then once I have woken up spends the next hour or so chasing it around the house, beford I chase him out of the catflap wigh said beastie in his mouth.

Never occurred to me before that religious foundations had a specific reason for wanting cats due to the attraction of vellum for rodents! Also very much liked that Ancrene Riwle considered that a single cat was the one permissible exception to complete isolation.
