This wasn’t that long ago… A reporter asking white folks in 1964 what they thought about the Civil Rights Act. And the answers are just 🤦🏽‍♂️

She probably had children who were raised to be just like her, then they had children who learned the same bigotry, ignorance, hatred, and assumptions about privilege. They don’t die off. They breed.

I was raised in that environment unfortunately. My birth family & foster homes were bigoted. I was 9 y.o. when I partially realized how awful it was, & then began to grow. It takes only a little humanity to recognize & reject bigotry. That's why what's happening now is so god-awful shocking.

They keep saying Black are already free. Where? Can they buy the house next door? Do they get the same treatment in stores? Do their neighborhoods and children's school buildings look like yours even though their taxes fund your schools and streets?

It’s just the perpetual lie they believe to claim they aren’t actually racists when in fact they’re racist and entitled af! There are racists of all colors but the white racists seem to be the entitled racists IMO. 😡

1964 is a very short time ago. 41 years. It’s the number of years most people work during their lives. Those people had children who they then “educated” ensuring it will perpetuate. And perpetuate for generations unless that cycle of hate is broken.

White lady with a drawl: “of course, being a southerner, I don’t like it at all.” Translation: “I wish we still had slaves”. The southern whites haven’t changed much since then.

"Ridiculous that POC want equal rights, why they have the same opportunities separately from us that the rest of us do". Yeah absolute hogwash, and KKK doublespeak for "We don't want these uppity POC thinking they're equal to us purebred white folk".

This feels like listening to my grandparents. Never bothered to learn the names of my black friends. Always "that little black boy". No surprise that today my grandfather feels that Fox News is too liberal. Fuck it all.

Sad - not much has changed in 60 years. Yesterday at No Kings, I talked to younger Black and brown former military members (25-35). They told me that the racism is from Latinos and Black people buying land and taking what's theirs. They know that white people are <50% of the population. They see.

Why be against something you swear they have? Like if I have a fruit basket and you had a banana and you want a fruit basket too and I say nah you have what I have and I don’t like you pushing for more. Wtf I hate people

Racism is taught by hateful, close-minded people! Unfortunately, there are still way too many. I hope there comes a day when it is no longer taught, or made acceptable and promoted by people in positions of influence and power. It’s up to us to call it out every time!

I remember it well.White Boomers grew up watching that unfold, and if you didn’t come away from the experiences and lessons of those times with enormous respect and grateful awe for our black population, I have no idea WTF you were watching! My mom was a civil rights activist,I walked with her at 10.

My stomach churned, and after the “I’m sorry I’m a southerner,” I had to stop watching. I remember those times, and we really, really don’t want them again. We have far greater numbers

I recently read "Robert E. Lee and Me: A Southerner's Reckoning with the Myth of the Lost Cause" by Ty Seidule (2020), an eyeopener on Southern culture. I'll mention 2 things: the culture doesn't see people of color as fully human & it is primed to cultishness by inculcation of Lee as a divine hero.

My mother‘s family were part of the (racist jerk…) white flight out of Chicago when Black people started moving in to their neighbourhood. I grew up w all this shit until I went to college & met actual Black people (gasp!) that didn’t fit the stereotypes I’d been taught. Fuck this bullshit. 🖖

Yep one hundred years of racial discrimination after the civil war. No equal opportunity in housing, education, employment and banking. No opportunity to build equity what so ever. This created generational poverty. Release the Epstein files. Epstein Epstein oy oy oy.

My Gram is 87. My Godfather is 81 Those most valued Wisers(my word for the elderly) in my community are all 80+ they were there. Hell🫩my Father is 73 he was run out of a Sundown town in the early 70's. This Amerikkkan Dream is a nightmare.

fuking disgusting. and they’re so proud to express their opinions…”they have equal raits though” and “the niggas ah justis free as we ah” .That suthun accent is so thick, it makes their words even more creepy.

So if, according to some of these folks, Black people already have all the same civil rights as white people do, and the Civil Rights Act is just guaranteeing that Black people have the same civil rights as white people do, why are these white people so against it?

It's like the preclearance provision struck down in Shelby Country v Holder: if petitioners don't want to do anything bad that the preclearance provision would prohibit, why are they suing to get rid of the preclearance provision?

Sixty years later, instilled in another generation. We are being punished by the Birchers, Heritage, Kochs, Federalists who listened to all of these people, remembered, and built their organizations on their anger and hatred.

Yup, and these kids in the videos will grow up to be little racists themselves ... but sure SCOTUS gut the voting rights act, Brett sure racial profiling doesn't harm people of color, sure houses still have racist covenants on their deeds to this day. WHEN CRITICAL THINKING ISN'T TAUGHT WTF

I'm a boomer who grew up in NYC and I remember it well, it was a sad time in history. I moved to NC 20 years ago and was disgusted to see many still behaving that way in the South, so many racists!

So STUPID and very sad. So, the Bible does not have 1 white person in it. Not Abraham, not Moses, not David, not Solomon, not Mary, not Jesus. Christians believe in Trinity: God,the Son, Father, Holy Ghost. God/Jesus: not WHITE. Where do whites get their audacity? 🤦‍♀️

I've wondered the same for most of my life. Recently read Robert E. Lee and Me: A Southerner's Reckoning with the Myth of the Lost Cause (2020, byTy Seidule). It opened my eyes esp to how this culture is so blindly prone to cultish adoration of white men. It should be required reading.

Look around the globe. White men still reign supreme and still messing up the world. They aren’t as powerful as they used to be so they are afraid. Afraid of losing their white privilege. That’s how insecure & weak they are. To clarify, NOT ALL WHITE MEN. It’s up to women to teach them. ESP boys.

Bacon's Rebellion. The rich didn't want POC and the Poor to organize against them, so they started "White Supremacy" in an attempt to get the poor to turn on POC. It worked. It was also the birth of the term "white race" and from it a bigoted, racist, movement that has plagued us for decades.

Thank you for this informative comment. I’d forgotten about Bacon’s Rebellion, as well as how the south was settled by the Second Sons of the British aristocracy. And you’re absolutely right: the dots connect, leading us to … Right now.

That’s what gets me the most. I grew up during the 60’s-70’s and it seemed like “old times”thinking to me even then. Today, what offends me the most is how audacious & comfortable people are in publicly expressing such blatant ignorance, something drumpf has down perfectly.

Same here. I don't have a lot of regrets in my life but one is that I didn't push back, and hard, on the war against "politically correct" speech & behavior every time someone made a "joke" about it. That seems to me when we began to lose civility & equanimity in public toward our fellow humans.

The saddest part is you can still get similar answers around this country right now if you ask about civil rights, thigh the people answering the same way are far less articulate these days. "I'm from the South, so you can imagine I don't like it." Me: really, no shit? I couldn't imagine...🤦🏻

It is mind boggling to me that so many folks don’t acknowledge just how bad life was for people of color a mere 60 years ago. And how little progress has been made in the years since the Act’s passage.

Growing up down south it's taken me my whole life to wake the fuck up to all this. Bit by bit. Now I look back on the years of desegregation that were so incomprehensible to me as a child - everyone so angry and getting only the view of my old school white Southern elders...[1/2]

[2/2] I grew up knowing racism was wrong (thanks, Mom and Dad, for being a little better than your parents), but it took the effort of my entire adult life, the desire to learn, to finally just *begin* to realize the depths of the problem. But it's a start.

Indeed , not so long ago. Incredibly embarrassing, but shall we take heart in how far we've come ? And how far we might still go in another 60 ! Where there is life there is HOPE 💙

They spoke their truth. This ignorance, prejudice and fear has never left America. It may have diminished in places but it is unfortunately still very alive. It festers like an open sore & is the stain of our land. Evil must always be fought against by every generation. It’s the way good prevails☮️

As a 70-year-old black woman from southern CA, who grew up here in the 50’s — 70’s but whose parents moved here from TX in the 50’s, I am proud of this work being done by Rachel. It is sooo important since the president is trying to reduce all other info. We shall not be moved!!!

Unfortunately those children listening to their parents comments are now gop leadership who continue to live in the dark ages of that time and continue to raise their children with the same abhorrent rhetoric.

All that's changed for many of them is, they wouldn't say it on camera for a while. But even that was too much for them. So they voted for Trump so they could again.

I was alive then & I was never like that!!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 What is WRONG with people like that???? Everybody has to hate some group or other….it’s just plain wrong!! I never want to understand anyone who hates any group of humans for their looks or where they were born or anything.

Fear it starts there. Must destroy all fears. That’s why people become the other, dirty criminals, drug traffickers, bad people. Kill no one is innocent. That’s why we need to stop this madness!

This mentality still exists today!, we are still battling to be treated equally. They just don’t believe we deserve to be equal. They consider themselves superior. It’s not all but enough to put an imbecile in the office who is a complete bigot, an absolute moron, and now thinks he is a king!
