If it doesn't disenfranchise millions it will have failed because that is the entire point. A "solution" in search of a problem: it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections, and it is a rare event when it happens. Shame on the Democrats who voted in favor of this.

I've had multiple name changes (born, adopted, married, divorced) - my current name is close to my birth cert but not identical. Having a RealID should also be acceptable since you have to prove your identity trail back to birth. (Have done it twice, took a while each time)

They don't realize it, but they may be disenfranchising their own base. The number of women living in rural areas who have passports is likely low. They may not hear from their TV media source that they need to get a copy of their marriage license if they have lost it.

I live in a small city. If you drive 2 miles outside of it in any direction... Trump flags fly. I guess it depends if these were women who got out to vote in the last election or not. If so, those numbers will dip. I also think as higher prices roll in, many in rural America will be less impressed.

It may not matter. Enforcement will likely be arbitrary, based on how the voter looks, say.

Yes. In 1971 I had a good paying job and my husband was a full time student. I applied to Mastercard and was turned down. I called them to ask why. They said “you could have a baby and wouldn’t pay us back.” For the next 50 years I would use only VISA and AMEX cards.

🤔👇 I distinctly remember when I was REQUIRED to change my SS card to match my married name (VA in late '90's). 🤬🤬 Now they want me to make me change it back?!

And I havent seen the act but am aware that in previous efforts the proponents want to have pure amateurs conduct a handwriting analysis at the polls. Most courts no longer allow testimony from handwriting "experts" much less a semi-annual poll worker.

Honestly, folks seeking the required documentation will overwhelm this iteration of the Department of State. Not to mention the probability that you're, willingly, putting yourself on a list ~all to do the thing that should be the easiest thing to do in the US. Fuckers.

My 99 year old mother probably can't find her marriage license from 75 years ago. I'm not sure she can lay hands on a birth certificate from nearly a century ago. This is ridiculous.

The republican party is an organized racist seditious criminal enterprise dedicated to obstructing the legitimate functions of democratic governance and disenfranchising and marginalizing its political opponents in pursuit of hegemonic power.

Yet they don't seem worried whereas the Repugs are doing terrible things to our government cuz they fear "being primaried" Why is it that one party will bend over backwards to avoid that situation and the other party merely shrugs it's shoulders?

After the Homeland Security Act, it was almost impossible for me to get a duplicate of my birth certificate because I was born on an Air Force Base. It took months, and lots of paperwork because those birth records are not accessible through the county, I had to go through the military

If this passes in the Senate, women will have the biggest campaign in history to show these bigots that women will not be silenced. This will just light a fire in us to get more women registered.

Lol, good one but of course the ball is in their court and all attorneys can bow to his children if they want to change their name it will be done asap. The Senate better vote this down!!!! I'm guessing that these men's wives are submissive to this!!!

So let’s start a nonprofit to help everyone get a passport or birth certificate and make this oppressive act meaningless. We need money and people to assist with applications. How do we start?

And four Democrats voted for this. WTF is wrong with them? One said, “Citizens should not vote.” Do they not know citizens can’t vote? Is it against the law & constitution, and all signatures & votes are verified. Vote these people out of we get to vote now.

Republicans make is sound so easy: however, I looked up the cost of obtaining a birth certificate (my parents are dead and held the original) and it minimally costs $45 in Michigan. Why should anyone have to pay to vote? I thought the poll tax was eliminated a long time ago.

When I heard about this law, I looked for my birth certificate and I couldn’t find it. So I went to vital records and I’ve got two copies. Just in case. It cost me $40 for both of them. I got it right on the spot.

The last that I knew, passports had a fee of less the $150, and I think that most, perhaps not all, have access to their birth certificate. While for some of us the fee is expensive, but if the GOP do pass this and it gets into law, it may be the only way to beat them at this game.

I am in a group for Italian dual-citizenship. What is also not discussed is that even if you can request your documents, those documents are often FULL of errors! Handwritten, cursive writing badly transcribed. And the process to CORRECT errors varies states, takes lots TIME and lots of MONEY.

I am not an American 🇺🇸 citizen, I live in Canada 🇨🇦 and what is happening in the USA makes me furious. Mike Johnson is spineless and chooses to compromise his religious values just to keep his high profile status and keep a crazy orange man child happy. Republican yes men, disgusting and weak.

You get a certified birth certificate (costs $25 in WA) *from the state you were born in*. You get a certified marriage certificate ($3 in WA, $11 if married prior to 1980) *from the _county_ you were married in*. Not federal records. You cannot get them the same day *except in person*.

That's the idea.. They want to limit who can vote primarily b/c if everyone who's eligible to vote-votes.. Republicans will lose. Republicans can't win in a fair fight. Especially w/all the fuck-ups from this felon president's regime. Totally see through & obvious yet they're drink w/power now.

Survivors of domestic violence who lost access to their docs or they were stolen or destroyed. More rights taken from us= Less power. This makes it REAL EASY for an abusive husband to keep his wife from voting. Making you prove who you voted for is something they do to us. #MAGA = abusers .

If the SAVE ACT passes the Senate—most women will loose the right to VOTE due to married name change. The GOP wants to disenfranchise women. Project 2025 and VP Vance advocate one vote per household made by the man/ father. Unmarried women no vote at all. Is anybody out there paying attention?

This is a little misleading. You ONLY have to show a marriage certificate IF you move and/or change your registration. That said, women should purposely change their legal names back to their maiden names - in protest.

And we're supposed to trust the same group of yahoos who sat with their thumbs straight up their asses while Fat Nixon tanked global the economy that they have a "plan" to ensure voter registration? Yeah. I don't think so.

Ass holes. If your name does not match your license: 1. Request copy of birth certificate via county registrar office 2. File for Passport on line or in person. 6-10 week lag time. You'll also need a Passport photo. Available at CVS and Walgreens. 3. Apply for a Real ID. at the DMV

However, right now nearly everyone has plenty of time to get the necessary documents and the Democratic Party has the money to pay all the expenses to obtain them. Get busy.
