Over 2,000 alumni from Vivek’s all-boys catholic high school in Cincinnati have signed and circulated a petition demanding that he pull the ad and issue a public apology for “ignoring the moral responsibilities” of his Jesuit education. I think he’s pretty cooked.

this is happening because big tech customer support basically doesn't exist and desperate people are asking ChatGPT what to do. ChatGPT is sending them to journalists
In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story:

We are unlikely to get an unbiased special counsel. But the House oversight committees could hold public hearings. It worked for Watergate.

We can hope that after the midterms there will be a public transparent oversight process that turns this report into a series of high-profile hearings.
Much of the public now gets news via video; Congress can use oversight to make compelling video so the country pays attention.
NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report.
Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.
There was a time, not so long ago, when Republican George W. Bush appointed a Muslim doctor and outstanding scientist Elias Zerhouni, born and raised in Algeria, as Director of the National Institutes of Health (nominated 6 months after 9/11).

the best mindset for how to treat the press actually came from a report i read about george w bush eons ago: treat them like a special interest group. they have their obsessions and fetishes and whatnot but theyre not god. they dont get to dictate shit. bsky.app/profile/lafo...
i got into this whole industry thinking (wrongly) that the mainstream press just had to systematically be corrected and nudged in the right direction after decades of right-wing bullying.
no. the right has a noise machine. the way to combat that noise machine is to out-shout it. period.
and whenever i bring up stealing what works on the right, people automatically ask: so we should lie?
no, i said we should steal what works. the left is stuck in the stone age on communication while the right is doing jetsons stuff.
After all the drama abt this “new ad” Cenk Uyghur’s group was dropping in Michigan and how it was tied to Netanyahu starting Iran War … he just grabbed & tried to get more mileage from an ad he made for his failed 2024 prez run when he was blaming egg prices on Israel. See the date of the tweet.
I'd put it a slightly different way: he saw his role as being the responsible adult whose role was protecting the Biden admin from being accused of weaponizing the justice department.
But rather than say that clearly for an audience that needed to hear exactly that, he went with "it's in the report" and "it's Congress' job to deal with it", which then got twisted into "Not guilty!" and that was the end of it.
Except for him getting harassed and insulted for the rest of his life.
Same problem Mueller had. He trusted in the system and responsible adults too much. Admirable, but did not meet the moment.
His report was basically "Trump is guilty of a lot of things, as outlined on page 3. Not the one specific impossible to prove thing I was asked to find, but a lot of stuff."
I'd revise this to add the word "hastily." He thought he had time to do things by the book, and that by-the-book was the only way to make it stick. He was wrong, but that's because he misjudged the GOP, his judicial peers, and basic electoral politics.
What makes this especially infuriating is that bad faith is highly concentrated in the GOP at the moment. The truth is almost the exact opposite. You cannot count on someone who freely affiliates with the contemporary GOP to be honest. They one of the least trustworthy groups you can conjure up.
This seems ludicrous because this is an obvious double standard, but it nonetheless showed up everywhere and was a way for a person to signal they were sober, serious person. To fairly investigate a Republican, you must appoint Republican. To fairly investigate a Dem, you must appoint a Republican.
Something happened in the 70's that crystallized politics (and many other topics) into a new set of assumptions and priors. It gave rise to Reaganism and completely crushed New Deal Socialism; Dems that eventually reemerged were and still are centrists scared of their own shadows.
The problem with lot of Democratic eminences 2015-2024 is that they told themselves “I have a holistic perspective that allows me to resist the short-term demands of the crowd” but instead they’re simply moving lockstep with a DIFFERENT crowd, of Reasonable Adults in the Room.
I think Garland perceived his job as being the responsible adult in the room whose role was to resist pressure to lock Trump up.
But when Trump was guilty of multifarious offenses ranging from treason to fraud to child predation, this turned Garland into Trump’s de facto protector.

There can never be another "water under the bridge" administration ever again, and part of that is going to involve shaming everyone on board with this one - voters included - as the disgusting pig racists they are

I would say that I am more obsessed with NIH and its power for good than I am with Director Bhattacharya who does not seem to respect that adequately.

After the first round elections, Congressman André Janones created a WhatsApp channel titled “Lula’s Army.” It ballooned to 10 million people following his commands on how to behave online to counteract Meta’s far-right-favouring algorithms. The right knows how to use socials. We must learn, too.
I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
From Zelenskyy. Patriot interceptors that could save innocent lives are sitting in European countries for weeks, which they paid for, unable to be transferred to Ukraine because Hegseth refuses to sign off.
And if the US goes into recession and Dems need to save Trump's bacon again, they must condition it on him stepping down.
It's an easy case to make, "can't risk having him sign the checks" and the presidency would remain with the GOP.
Who are the Democrats who didn't sign the letter? They think Trump will spare them? If you failed to support Trump once, whoever you are, sooner or later he will send his goons after you. That's the message. Don't make it just about Omar.
The firing or resignation of Russ Vought should be the top demand in negotiations with the administration. Congress cannot reliably wield the power of the purse while he remains in charge of OMB.
Democrats laying the groundwork for real opposition, with Congress asserting budget authority to stand against Trump abuses and rights violations.
Will have to overcome cries that not passing Trump's budget is irresponsible. But it's the opposite. And starting now makes that hurdle easier to clear.
NEWS --> Dems are planning novel ways to wield power of the purse against Trump's corrupt prosecutions of critics like Ilhan Omar if they win House. Reps Pramila Jayapal and Jamie Raskin tell me a range of aggressive tactics will be deployed.
Details in my new piece:

I really like the point made here: Dems should be making a public case right now for novel tactics like defunding Trump's corrupt prosecutions, to make them more intelligible later:

i would like one of those NYT flyover country focus group panels but for EV/hybrid drivers in deep red states who got shit for years from their neighbors for driving the woke and gay electrics and how they're feeling these days
The typical gasoline car driver has paid $440 more since the crisis began. US drivers that have managed to make the switch to EVs are now reaping the benefits, experiencing only an increase of $17 in charging costs since the beginning of March.
Note the key phrase "so many people." Yglesias thinks it's fine—good in fact—that American billionaires are very interested in foreign elections and routinely influence them to promote corruption and fascism. His concern is that filthy plebs like you and me might want better things for everyone.
