My most toxic trait is probably how I'll randomly bring up and defend the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist anime. Does it get extremely weird? Is the "worldbuilding" kind of bananas? Yes but these make it BETTER. Also Brotherhood wasn't brave enough to give us Ed teaming up with Fritz Lang to fight Nazis.

To this day I love the idea of Conqueror of Shamballa, the parallel worlds, the batshit journey and all. I just wish that the team didn't have to cut down on the story because of runtime. There were some good scenes from Aikawa's early drafts that could've really worked with the film imo.

I maintain that the 2003 Anime was a little better simply because Brotherhood fast forwarded through the character building and establishing empathy in the audience. It relied on people having already seen the first show for that and, because of that, felt kind of hollow to me when I watched it.

I'm annoyed that 2003 affected the pacing of 2009 resulting in them skipping the Train Hijacking and Youswell completely, but I'll never forgive Bones for ramming in a transphobic trope where there was none in the work previously in the form of Barry the Chopper's Modus Operandi!!!!

In the Manga and 2009 he's just a burnt out butcher who went to chop up people and that allows him to be funny in giving Al an existential crisis and later being somewhat tragic following his stint as Mustang Squad's Pet Serial Killer, but 2003? Ohohoho!

In 2003 they decide he presents as a woman to lower his victims' guard before throwing them in his ice truck to chop them up in the freezer. Not-Trans-But-Performs-Like-It Serial Killer Trope! There was no reason for Bones to add that! No text to support it!

Loved it. The twists it shares with the manga hit just as well, the original ones perhaps even more so. It's not as organic, but it dared so much. Shamballa rules.

But wait, you're just right. I love the 2003 anime it was fantastic and flawed an beautiful in its own unique ways! I struggle to watch the movies that followed it sometimes but there was still something to them!
