Newsletter: I am sick and god damn tired of everybody pretending that generative AI is the next big thing. The media is complicit in accepting fantastical nonsense - both in the numbers put out by OpenAI and the silly jobs created by Anthropic - and it has to stop. www.wheresyoured.at/reality-check/

wheresyoured.atReality CheckI'm sick and god-damn tired of this! I have written tens of thousands of words about this and still, to this day, people are babbling about the "AI revolution" as the sky rains blood and crevices open...

Every story about OpenAI feels bereft of analysis or conscious thought. Their agents don't work, they will burn $6bn on inference alone in 2025, they have no path to profitability, yet most articles talk about them like a gifted child brimming with potential. www.wheresyoured.at/reality-check/

Generative AI is a remarkable con — a just-good-enough simulacrum of human expression to get it past the gatekeepers in finance and the media, knowing that neither will apply a second gear of critical thinking beyond "huh guess we're doing AI now." It's a disgrace. www.wheresyoured.at/reality-check/

If you tell a decision maker that you can replace whiny, sickly, inconsistent, back talking humans who keep having CHILDREN they need to "nurture" with a Sarah Lee boxed cake mix robot they don't ask questions, the cake is good enough.

Yesterday I needed to know IRS taxpayer correspondence response times. Two questions and 2 minutes later and I had the URLs of 3 gov't webpages with the info. This kind search would normally take me half an hour or more.

That OpenAI ‘is’ the LLM industry *now* surely doesn’t mean that the LLM industry is forever predicated on OpenAI’s success or that the economic potential of LLMs is limited to what OpenAI can achieve? When ppl reference DeepSeek I assume they are pointing out the *possibility* of profitable LLM.

I haven’t yet seen these companies outline what happens when they inevitably have to gate services behind payments. I can’t imagine the average punter will happily pay $25 (or whatever) per month to make their emails read a bit better.

On the cost of inference going down: LLMs seem to have hit a wall in terms of what they can learn (they are already trained on the whole internet). If we move to models which are capable of learning as they go, then inference and learning become entwined and the cost will sky-rocket.

Welcome to the economy of companies that can't turn a profit but are valued at astronomical valuations. We need more leaders/managers who can add value to customers while making a profit for their organization. If this disjointed economy continues, we are in for a rude awakening, circa 2008.
