This is a chaos bet, but it would be really funny if the reason that Anthropic and OpenAI are cutting their prices is that they're planning to move everybody over to token-based billing. The end of subsidies sold as "a massive price cut to democratize access to intelligence"

I think the reason is that their revenue is collapsing after companies discovered how expensive agents are and users were switched to token-based billing. There's nothing more important for a successful IPO than showing revenue growth. It's even more important than showing the path to profitability.

That‘s a safe bet. The monthly plans are MUCH too cheap for power users. They have to move everyone to token based billing. Plus of course the tokens will increase in price a lot over time.

ironically, it was what was going to happen with the internet and traffic usage compared to flat rates. now they get to see what happens when they can do what they want, uncontested

Given the ratio of users who are just free chatbot users, who is the selling point for this? If they weren't paying for a $5/month already, do they think $2/month is going to be the introductory rate to get people hooked on the metaphorical drug?

when my fellow English Majors on LinkedIn were moronically pumped that AI companies started posting Communications jobs at $150k/yr last month, it was actually all just because they needed the warped mind of a top-tier class traitor to finesse the language of a long and messy drowning, wasn't it?

The thing with token prices I think is that even they are at first going to attempt to be sold at a subsidy. It's going to be a while before they're forced to be honest about the actual costs. The inconsistencies we're seeing might be the companies figuring out how to do this.

i don't know what you mean but can tell you from direct knowledge that they are absolutely going to ruin their already-negative margins with this. It's the antithesis of how they want this business model to go. It's expanding your customer base while somehow losing more money. It's a losing scenario

I love that you still think there is still a business model beyond setup Ponzi scheme, cash out and make for the hills. Your faith in humanity in the face of such contrary evidence is admirable.

Yeah, you're not wrong. I think we're going to see them trying to somehow make per-token costs look better than they actually are and then pull the rug out from under users fully after they've had time to acclimate to the change.

It's pretty simple to spin "We'll make you pay for every damn bit that you take from us" into "Our promise to you is that you only pay for what you actually use" After all, metered utilities have been doing it for decades.

They're trying to capture a large enough population to ensure there's the (already captured) political pressure to make AI mandatory

My safe bet is that this specifically coinciding with summer break shows that their biggest user base is still students using it as a crutch. They are desperate to show usage data during June-August to prove that it's more than just a plagiarism app that does someone's homework for them.
