this is again precisely as intended, not side-effect it's not infight, it's the big companies building their own moat within their own area of competition goal is getting locked in, to seal the economy and exit it goal is rewriting the rules, not playing within them

I really, non ironically, wonder how people in 2026 believe reality allocates them some sort of "luck" quota that affects them specifically. And don't quite realize that it's merely a variance of perception. The world doesn't adapt to you, you adapt to the world.

if you're hoping they won't consume the software industry you're just somehow completely divorced from what's happening because it happened awhile ago, that games over, now we're waiting for investors to finally agree there's no more industries left to consume and vanish in a puff of smoke

bit of Trump's ignorant mentality is revealed by how he expects to impose "SI" through the control of institutions. Language is bottom up, always been. If he succeeds then this would be unprecedented, I guess.

If you had told me a year ago there would be an Ebola outbreak of this scale and the world would take this little notice, I probably would not have believed you.

might be more recently edited, tho? Hard to know, it seems Goodreads doesn't clearly defines dates and edits... Such a bad website and service

kind of funny after years of bullshit and gaslighting about all the work necessary to patch back the things they cut. Now it's even cross-game, done in a weekend

some "questions" are really simple to answer: one is run by fascists with deep government infiltrations, the other was not.

Still trying to understand how Napster got shut down, but Anthropic is going public and still hasn’t paid us authors yet after stealing our work.

if your programming work consists of doing automation rather then doing the code for it, maybe you're not suited for the job AI really does feed on people stupidity and incompetence

Hard to find the words tonight. Helen was an amazing journalist, smart, hard-working, clear-eyed. She was also a kind, generous person and a good friend. Sad beyond words.

Helen Branswell was a gift — to family and friends, to colleagues, and to masses of people whose lives were made better by the work to which she was so devoted. I was lucky to know her. www.statnews.com/2026/10/13/h...

I worked with—and deeply admired—Helen for almost 30 years. She was hands down *the best source* about emerging infectious diseases that I've ever known. My first warning of COVID was when on Dec 28, 2019 she reposted a ProMED mail report of an atypical pneumonia cluster: "This doesn't look good."

Your daily reminder that more people are playing and buying PC games than ever before. This is a growing industry. The only reason the industry is struggling is because the people are the top are vacuuming up all the money made to divert it to AI in an unhinged all-in multi-trillion-dollar gamble.

i think if you told me like even just 3 years ago that the fate of the videogame and console market was an immediate crash heralding an era where the smartest purchase you can make is a bootleg handheld that runs pc games i would've called you insane

in the meantime I dropped everything I was reading, trying to pick up a somewhat regular reading habit, and going back to Erikson. Again Forge of Darkness reread, restarting at arbitrary point at page 150. Up to 170 now.

20 impeccable pages, every time I go back to this book I'm amazed. It's the most mature and heartfelt, by far Erikson's best. My plan now is to read this to the end, then straight into Fall of Light. No commentary. I just read and shut the fuck up.

also, I do understand why it's a book that other readers didn't like. In 20 pages there are 9 different PoVs, each with its inner guarded world. The prose is dense and the writing is what I like the most.

In other words, it is the job of scientists to devise experiments that can test their claims, to always be cautious abt what they are claiming, and to critically evaluate the claims of other scientists. By these well-established standards, no serious science is happening behind Anthropic's claims.

because it's built on fatalistic fascist ideology it's never perceived as "gambling", but destiny

for the new york times magazine, I wrote about why everything is "gambling" now (the short answer: actually everything is the statistical style now, and gambling is just how most of us understand that)
