OpenAI is washed. Revenue grew from $5.7bn in q1 to $6.7bn in Q2, and the operating margin got worse, though for whatever reason the journal didn’t disclose what it was or how much worse it was. Last quarter it was (non-GAAP) negative 122% for some context

Oh interestingggg. Purely from a coding agent usage perspective, everyone I know seems to have been switching from Opus to Sol (my own ant/oai spend basically swapped entirely).

I wonder what the split of rev is like from tech co's paying for opus/sol VS chat subs VS desktop app. And if tech co's are using azure/aws hosted, not direct ant/oai API, what amount goes back to ant/oai

Haven't seen evidence that Anthropic is better than OpenAI in costs. Their only differentiator is that they made a bunch of tech journos all oink together as one when they spun that tale about being the good guys killing kids in Palestine vs stinky mean OpenAI that was also asking to kill kids.

Anthropic had $11.5bn in revenue in Q2, and claimed a small (non GAAP) operating profit because Elon musk discounted two months of compute (May and June). Not really sure what OpenAI does from here! This is a huge gap to cover. bsky.app/profile/lunc...

There's no way Anthropic is any better right? Like they're just sitting back & saying "thank god our numbers aren't out there like this"?

Journal story updated - OpenAI lost $12.3bn in Q2 including stock based compensation. Will add that Anthropic was “not more efficient on compute,” it got a two month discount in Q2 from SpaceX. Either way grim shit from OpenAI. Negative 183% non GAAP operating margin in Q2

Anthropic is also ok with it, they just wanted some stipulations. OpenAI was just dumb enough to leap at any offer that might eventually lead to a bailout down the line

I feel like it all being non-GAAP just means the writer of this piece essentially wasted everyone's time by even putting this together. If using non-GAAP magic math do we actually know anything more than if they just farted into a mic and released that instead of a sheet full of made up numbers?

If the revenue grows by 18% a quarter, it will have grown 10x by 2030 — to $67 billion a quarter. $500 billion a year is $125 billion a quarter. It needs to pick up the pace a little: to 24% a quarter.

Well at least it isn’t like they also have trillions of off the books debt in a circularly financed scheme that, if it were to disappear, would flip the entire economy into a deep recession.
