this is abusive boomer grandparent/parent brain. I've known multiple different boomers that believe in something called "grandparents rights" too. You shouldn't have to talk to anyone you don't want to, especially if it's your parents

This is a quietly metastasizing moral panic

My MIL suggested once that she and FIL had some modicum of access to my nephew that they could intervene in his life in some capacity, and did in fact say, "grandparents have rights!"

I did then slow my speech down, enunciating clearly to say, So long as his mother and father are both alive you have, absolutely, zero, none at all whatsoever privilege to their grandson. And even if she's a shit mom (and, she is not!) You still have no access. They didn't appreciate my candor

Grandparents' rights are a real thing, though in the case of family law it's more about trying to get abused/neglected kids away from their parents into a (hopefully) less abusive living situation. Here, it's just a bunch of old assholes unable to acknowledge that they mistreated their kids.

The use of the state to force grown children to stay in contact with abusive parents would be ine of the greatest examples of authoritarian overreach in my lifetime and it's got some stiff competition.

My dad, a literal 1945 boomer, always said the same, as far back as I can remember. And come to think of it, my mum too (“well, all these horrible parents won’t get any visits when their kids grow up, why do you think I keep bribing you with chocolate?”)

That person further down the thread where she's like "I APPARENTLY said something MEAN at my son's wife's bridal shower and then this treatment came out of NOWHERE...anyway, thr next time I saw him was when he handed over the rental cheque"

Whatever the situation is, if Person A has the power to EVICT Person B, then Person A is NOT THE VICTIM. The idea of having to pay money to someone you are trying to get a healing distance from...that makes my skin crawl

Fuck these Boomer (and some Gen X) assholes. bsky.app/profile/brad...

One of her "I.T. Companies" was a dating app to help antivaxxers hook up. She lives in Old Saybrook CT, which is the diet coke version of Desperate Housewives. She's a total bitch on wheels and good on her kids for GTFO. 👍 www.brainzmagazine.com/post/exclusi...

We recently had a rather nasty lawsuit over grandparents' rights in Rhode Island. And the grandparents were real pieces of shit, too. Evil doctors who quite possibly killed their daughter with bad medical advice & fraudulent treatments. Thank God they lost big and set a new precedent.

I had to cut off my Boomer father. He's an Ex-CEO, wealthy, hasn't worked since he was 45. My age now. He has given no assistance my entire life and when I became disabled from a serious neurological condition and could not work he said I should suck it up. FYI I was a doctor and owned a restaurant.

Grandparents rights are a thing in some states. Including FL and TX. I knew women who had to fight their parents/ex’s parents and won. There are strict rules- and they don’t usually apply if the parents are alive and choosing no contact. They usually get 1-2 overnight visits per month in real cases.

All 50 US states have “grandparents’ rights” in some way or another since like 1965. Since like 2000 tho, the US State presumes that the parents have the interests of the child foremost unless there is good reason to doubt it but otherwise parents have a right to raise their child as they see fit.

The statutes are sometimes very broad saying even “any third party can call for visitation rights”. So in essence a person challenging for visitation or custody over a primary parent under Troxel v Granville has to prove it harms the child But every state has one supreme.justia.com/cases/federa...

supreme.justia.comTroxel v. Granville, 530 U.S. 57 (2000)Troxel v. Granville: There is a fundamental right under the Fourteenth Amendment for a parent to oversee the care, custody, and control of a child.

At least there's nothing state can do to ruin the lives of people in this case unlike the satanic panic of the 80's that ruined several kids and adults lives over things that never happened.
