afterthought 1 — "Finally, art is democratized," proclaims area programmer man making $200k per year. "No longer is it held solely in the hands of the elites: furry porn artists struggling to pay rent"

afterthought 2 — clear bridge between "you can't customize LLMs like you can tools" and the almost comical unpredictability of image generation, where getting the same character twice is a crapshoot. but i didn't want to get into image stuff too much or the post would've been twice as long

afterthought 3 — i forgot i muted "AI" and some related words on bluesky so i'm sorry if i don't see your reply lmao

afterthought 5 — you could probably add a bridge of """the metaverse""" in here, but every time i think about it i just remember World Baby and i can't ever take it any more seriously than that

afterthought 6 — i once heard A Hater was telling people not to even visit my website, so i wouldn't get the ad revenue. but there were no ads. i'm guessing they used adblock and just took for granted that there would be ads they weren't seeing, because what website doesn't have ads? (mine)

afterthought 7 — if sama gets what he wants and everyone just has chatbots write code for them, i wonder: ⓐ how will the next generation develop enough skill to review the generated code? ⓑ when a new thing comes out, who's supposed to write the new code using it that the chatbots get trained on?

One of my friends - very clever guy even though terrifyingly normal (fintech programmer, hobby seems to be buying expensive things), who I used to really respect as a good programmer has pivoted to saying "I don't understand why anyone would program without chatgpt" and like, im so confused

This is a person whose entire career was doing programming for a type of system he was exceptionally good at, in a framework he knew almost by heart. What purpose does he have to just throw that into the wind and hope the correct answer is blown back at his face? I cannot answer this.

From interacting with him and some others in similar situations it really seems like this sort of person, someone who bought a PlayStation 5 before knowing a single game they wanted to play on it, really just decided to outsource their thinking because "its cool tech and i want - need - to use it"

I agree with basically everything in this article. I tried using some of these tools out of curiosity once, and because I was trying to do something very weird I wasn’t sure how to do. It sent me down a like 10 hour rabbit hole trying increasingly more elaborate workarounds which didn’t work…

… apologizing profusely each time. Until I found out, to my horror and embarrassment, I had looked at an outdated version of the docs when I began and there was actually just a fucking global variable built in that could do exactly what I needed in the latest version

Despite doing like, idk ten? separate queries, detailed ones, it never picked up that I could actually grab what I needed from that variable instead of doing elaborate tricks to try and extract it

it’s so fucking grim that this is something people actually use, and trust as an authoritative source, and just generally do not see how antisocial it is. I’m scared for the kids man, the stories of how rampant it is in schools is SO dark
