hi everyone. this is the video game Bombe. you should definitely only play it if you are excited by the prospect of eventually understanding whatever the fuck is going on here
it's minesweeper but you can't clear or flag the cells yourself. you can only write rules about when to clear or flag a cell. and then that case will be solved forever and you'll never have to think about it again. so everything that's left is now harder than that. and that's the whole game
it wasn't clear whether the game was actually beatable until one (1) person finished it. they remain the only person to ever do so, three years after release
btw the ui is kind of obtuse/dense, and for localization reasons it has as little text as possible. almost everything has a useful alt function if you right click, ctrl-click, shift-click, and/or double-click
anyway talk to me about bombe
these posts made me reopen Bombe for the first time in a year or so
There were so many active rules on the puzzle I last worked on, that the circles on the node were like 5 pixels wide
I've been lazily clicking the "Hint" button, staring at the board, coming up with a rule and generalising it a bit, but that seems to have stopped working at around 5900 hexagon. Did you need a different approach to reach 6000? Or do I just need to stare for longer?
eventually you do hit the point where you have to follow a complicated hint further and untangle it one step at a time. paint tool is very helpful. (much further on i sometimes make level-specific rules that i immediately delete, but you don't need that for hex)
good targets include right-clicking the hint button, right-clicking regions in the rule constructor, and ctrl-clicking anything in the rule constructor
