You're laughing. I'm trying to get people to to click on "hey guys it's not hard to figure out why farmers love Trump, he's opening up whole new types of farm slavery" as much as they click on "here's some more gossip about Ballerina Farm" & you're laughing

Oliver Willis@owillis.bsky.social

i understands that this is how you get people to click on something and i am all for that but ill never quite get over using "youtube thumbnail reaction face" for videos about important issues

The two big projects I work on: * the update system at Oxide. If this breaks, our product cannot be updated any more. The entire update process is autonomous, too * cargo-nextest. ~a quarter of professional Rust devs use it. If this breaks, many people have a bad time So yes, I look at the code

hailey@hailey.at

new poll: do you still even look at the code?

In addition to the abject racism, the rest of the new rules make clear r/opensource is committed to being a highly insular, exclusionary community. Projects posted must be successful long-term projects with active communities. The person posting must be a long-time active Redditor.

hooooo boy we don't like this no we don't > If you don't speak English, you need to find a different community. We cannot distinguish between AI-written and AI-translated. Since you don't speak English, you can't even verify yourself if it translated correctly. www.reddit.com/r/opensource...

IMO, if C++ really fails to ship contracts here, thereby slipping them to C++29 at the earliest, it’s another nail in the coffin and C++ will continue on its slow decline toward being a legacy language.

This is what I see and what my younger son tells me as well. Kids want to make stuff! If this was such a great tool it would not be this hard to convince people they should use it.

“Boo!”fus (The Doofus)@doofusthehobbit.bsky.social

The middle school students I see everyday are 1000% anti-generative AI art. They can’t stand it, and they laugh when they see it, and make fun of others for using it.

There’s no discussion of potential penalties in this article, but if people don’t go to jail for flagrant illegality like this, it will keep happening. For companies like Google, fines are just another cost of doing business. Something to toss on the balance sheet and weigh against profits.

in other news i have seen a programmer slowly rediscover "institutional knowledge" from first principles literally reinventing plato's cave and the shadows, where the shadows are the software delivered, and the hand puppets are the shared beliefs of the organization, but with terms like 'metaspec'

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: compare it to “written in Rust!”. You can’t STOP rust programmers from slamming a Written in Rust sticker on every goddamn think we make

Casey S. Pumpkins 🎃@caseyexplosion.bsky.social

It always comes back to this for me; if AI was so good, such a disclosure would be a selling point. If AI was everything these slop jockeys said it was, they should be proud to let people know their game was AI made. But the proof is in the pudding, and they can't stand that people don't want it.

I’ll gladly accept whatever guff comes my way for this, but I’m hoping the Democratic nominee in 2028 is, political questions aside, young and aspirational. If you’re younger than, say, 30, you might not remember how magical election night 2008 felt. Civic pride doesn’t begin to describe it.

I work in manufacturing. I know everyone loves to complain thst “they don’t make them like they used to” but in most cases things are made both better and cheaper, as well as much more safely for the people building them.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

From the people who brought you "my kid never heard of trans people until Paxton flooded the airwaves with anti-trans advertising and now they're always asking me about them"

Pebble devs - we're working on something big for you 👀The biggest change to the SDK since...forever. Plugins: headless apps that provide data (eg weather, finance, traffic) or offer actions (home control, music, webhooks) to other apps, watchfaces and the Index agent.

Even as someone who’s excited about the future of program proving there’s a skeptical part of me that feels like it’s a goalpost move. I’ve got two specific problems:

rain 🌦️@sunshowers.io

Reminder that "formally proved program X" is a meaningless statement. You formally prove that some program or a reduced model of it upholds some kind of property or invariant

- There’s a set of properties you’re trying to prove, right? So someone has to write and review that. At risk of flippancy, that’s just the programming job again, writing that stuff.

- it’s great for like stdlib stuff, but my experience with app and commercial development is that requirements are always significantly more ambiguous than anyone gives them credit for and if you’re lucky enough to get around that, they’re still more qualitative than anyone gives credit for.

Thinking about an extremely rusty URL router. In my mind it would be opinionated and limited, such that at any particular point, you can have any number of fixed routes and then a single wildcard route which is passed to the handler.

If it looks like an Amazon delivery and drives like an Amazon delivery, then it's an Amazon delivery, right? Not according to Amazon. Big companies like Amazon have built a vast network of subcontractors who deliver their packages while shielding them from accountability.

I have absolutely been subject to people not thinking my distress was real until I had an emotional outburst about it Extremely frustrating on many levels. Definitely exacerbated the problem.

SW friends, OnlyFans and Fansly profile links should work now! Refresh or force-quit and reopen your app a couple times so you get the update

alex benzer@alexbenzer.com

some folks reported not being able to use certain adult-focused platforms (like onlyfans and fansly) — there was an internal miscommunication and these were accidentally added to the list of disallowed domains. this is now fixed! but you may need to refresh your app to get the update. 💙

While some folks are out there using 4 as their private key, the @oxidecomputer.bsky.social key ceremony is quite a bit more elaborate and--many would argue--more secure. On Monday Oxide's Philip Tricca joined me and @bcantrill.bsky.social to describe how we create and store this critical secret.
