Another thought on the Bluesky discourse: Bluesky on its absolute worst, most sanctimonious, most "I think you'll find" day has NOTHING on TikTok comment sections/stitches. But TikTok is growing well. To me, that suggests general user utility/attractiveness may be a bigger issue here.

If you want an audience and promotion of your content, then Bluesky isn't it. The majority of folk who are here just want real-time news and no bullshit. I.e. early Twitter. As soon as the sanctimonious crowd arrive I'm offski. 🦶🏻🦶🏻

TikTok is growing well despite the fact that if you post about the nice flowers your boyfriend bought you, the top three comments will be folks telling you that he's cheating, that daily roses are the bare minimum, or that you've set women back 80 years by following patriarchal norms in gifts.

What drove a lot of the "content creators" off Twitter more than its owners politics was his decision to render it useless for outgoing links. Musk made it very difficult to impossible to promote anything on his site. It was utility as much as ideology.

At the moment, an active challenge for Bluesky (in my opinion) is that it's a website that encourages hot-takes but does yet have a critical mass of rapid fact content to respond to. Like, there's a reason half the threads on here start with an X screenshot. That can be fixed though!

I think that's true from a browsing standpoint, but if you're the one in a stitched video you will not only likely get a notification about it, but a thousand additional notifications when other users tag you in it.

Ok, but who is going to pay the server costs? Bluesky is a business that needs to cover costs, either by advertising to a lot of people, charging a lot of people a subscription fee, or by demonstrating sufficient growth that investors pile in more capital.

I get most of my news from here through all the clips and links that get posted. Which then get dissected and discussed and deepened by context. I like that. I once paid to read a newspaper every day. Don’t want ads, but I’d be willing to spend a (small) amount for a sub. If 40M did, then: $$$

Just a general point. Not arguing. Bluesky is constantly being attacked from all sides as a fringe collection of annoying weirdos stuck in an echo chamber. My experience is much different. Positive, diverse (within a left liberal framework) and easy to curate. Could be an unfair reputation problem.
