I once sat down in a Chinese restaurant with my date, who was Chinese, and a waitress saw us from across the room and wordlessly sprinted over to shove a knife and fork in front of me. Some scars never heal. 😢

I have never once – to my knowledge – ever been on the receiving end of racism. I wonder how many non-white British of the same age (60) can say the same.

I was once eating in a restaurant in Singapore with a group of my Swedish colleagues and some locals, and using my chopsticks quite (I thought) dextrously, and a waiter very discretely came up behind me and slid a fork onto the table under my elbow. No-one else received one.

I had an apartment in Turkey and once got called a 'foreigner' contemptuously by a particularly nasty neighbour who we knew had been run out of Istanbul by the authorities. He went on to be run out of his new abode after attacking an accountant with a baseball bat and stealing a field full of olives

I grew up in Slough and once got told I should go home by a kid from Iraq. It wasn’t very racist though, my mum was trying to find me.
