They ring the doorbell because that's the very last thing you'd expect

I've known people who keep a dedicated gun right by the door for just this situation. Some folks live in a completely different universe.

As someone directly targeted by NeoNazis, with them sending people to my home, I do have guns by my door. I put out a heads up on our neighborhood FB page to let my neighbors know of the targeting but also included a statement about educating their kids on risk level due to the climate

If your instinct when you hear the doorbell is to reach for your gun you should probably not have access to a gun. And also consider moving someplace very rural with no neighbors, or to a huge anonymous apartment building.

years ago i worked for the power utility here and had to do door knocks to notify people of line work (usually in easements in their yard) and had the doorbell answered by somebody with a shotgun. i was not thrilled
