You absolutely should not dismiss the AT Protocol technology that runs this place as boring nerd stuff, because that is the exact technology we are going to need to ensure that usable social media that isn’t controlled by Nazis continues to exist.

I absolutely do not think it’s the singular “solution” to anything. But we absolutely can and should facilitate building better technical infrastructure that can work hand in hand with the process of building better social solutions.

You don’t need to become an expert on AT Protocol, you don’t need to learn to code, but I really do want to impress upon people that “federated social media” is a vitally important concept in a time of global authoritarian and technofeudalist consolidation.

And yes, while Mastodon isn’t my thing and I prefer AT Proto to Activity as federated social media infrastructure, I am VERY glad it exists and is being built out, too. The future absolutely requires online communication hubs that can’t be bought by dead-eyed Nazis.

Wake me up when there's more than three and a half nerds running personal PDSes. Bsky is neat, but the federation aspect is mostly a sham.

And this doesn’t mean Bluesky or AT Protocol are THE answer to the problem of building social media that is much hard for authoritarians to control - but it has been the most compelling effort I’ve seen in this space so far, and the one I’ve actually enjoyed using most. We need more such efforts.

Yes from a user pov and at age 63, I didn't find masterdon user friendly. Ppl there are quite snobby about alt text too! I wonder if they have actual jobs or just sit around scolding ppl posting pictures of their pets! My tribe is here at bluesky!

I used to be less convinced of this, but I’ve really come around to it in the past year or so, especially because I think federation, if done properly, could be really useful for digital sovereignty and reducing the influence of US tech companies.

If anything I see the opposite problem: the stewards of the tech find the work of keeping up the community to be boring. The tech is important, but adoption depends heavily on a positive experience for early adopters.

I really need to finally do my homework on the protocol. My holy grail is the social media equivalent of WordPress: self-hostable, minimal requirements, fast setup, extensible for the nerds but good enough out of the box for the 99%. I know others are pursuing that too.
