There's perhaps no clearer example of Canadians protesting with their wallets than the massive drop in visits to America Canadian tourist spending in the US has fallen 24% since 2024, mirrored by a 24% rise in non-US tourism spending.

“Vancouver, grow up.” Video by Bob Mackin of Colleen Hardwick last night insulting the intelligence of anyone who voted for Ken Sim four years ago or Pete Fry now. I wonder if her base will ever change their opinions on whether this rhetoric has been an effective way of expanding her support.

Meanwhile, price monitoring shows that the price of diesel in the US has a no correlation with Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. The ⬆️ in US diesel prices does have a very strong correlation with Trump's illegal and idiotic war on Iran. (2/2)

Mind-boggling. The sovereign citizen wallet inspector asked, and the tax agency just handed it over.

He followed a debunked conspiracy theory to claim a tax refund. So why did the CRA agree to a $40M payout? Wild story. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

Russian bot traffic has dropped to nearly 0 after Ukraine struck a Yandex data center in Vladimir, Russia

Anonymous@youranoncentral.bsky.social

Ukrainian drones struck three Yandex data centres in Russia, shutting down two and crippling the third. The attacks disrupted more than 80 services, including banking, transport and cloud infrastructure, following Russian strikes on Ukrainian data centres.

evilfred.bsky.social reposted

The Yandex datacenter in Vladimir received drone sanctions, and is currently being migrated to the cloud. According to the Yandex status board, all Yandex services are completely unavailable in Russia. Maybe targeting our datacenters was a bad idea. Enjoy your digital detox.📵

I agree with the 2026 Vancouver Police Department that you need to centre data when talking about crime and perceptions, and do it through long-term trends instead of short term fluctuations or individual stats. But that’s not how the 2020-2022 VPD talked about crime and perceptions.

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

Owen Jones@owenjones.bsky.social

The West helped create Vladimir Putin. A senior Western diplomat warned in 1994 where capitalist 'shock therapy' would take Russia. They ignored him - and ended his diplomatic career.

An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers.

disconnect.blogThe media has the AI threat all wrongGenerative AI is harming people today. We don’t need to waste time fantasizing about science fictional scenarios.

it's sad when the NYT won't stop anthropomorphizing next token generators. they don't have brains or motivation, they can't take action on their own. this should be reported in a way to put responsibility on the OpenAI employees guiding these next token generators.

kate conger@kateconger.com

The latest update in the rogue A.I. saga: OpenAI agents that were supposed to be performing mundane data requests for things like health data, historic photos and wait times at theme parks resorted to hacking attempts when they couldn't access the data they wanted www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/t...

@kateconger.com the NYT should take a note of the AP's new guidelines on reporting on LLMs. machines don't have internal motivation or a world model. they just generate tokens. they shouldn't be framed as independent actors, they are doing what their operators told them to do.

This is a good example of what @ntusikov.bsky.social and I have been warning about for years: US tech companies are uniquely susceptible to extra-legal US government pressure (Google isn’t compelled to change Lake Ontario’s name.) Because of this, they represent a direct threat to Canadian autonomy.

Americans hear "51st state" as Trump trolling. Canadians hear it as an existential threat to their sovereignty. That gap in perception is why Carney can't afford to look conciliatory, even if the economics of retaliation don't add up. This isn't just a trade war anymore.
