even as a teenager in the 2000s, I always found it fascinatingly stupid when supposedly-smart analysts claimed they just couldn't understand why people in Iraq and Afghanistan were resisting the U.S. occupation. is "people don't like it when you violently invade them" really all that mysterious

MAGA military geniuses are talking about Minnesota protestors like they are the Iraqi insurgency, the Taliban, and the Viet Cong all rolled into one.

Right?!?! I will never, ever, as long as I live forget the day that ignorant twat Kyra Phillips quizzed the doctor of an Iraqi boy who was burned, lost both his arms, and whose entire family was killed by one of our bombs, if the boy understood the noble purpose of "Operation Iraqi Freedom".

I remember watching a piece on CNN where a counterinsurgency expert informed the viewer that, in many parts of Iraq, it was considered a grave insult to separate the men from the women into different rooms after you've stormed into a family's house.

A lot of the same people were utterly outraged when the occupation government collapsed thirty seconds after the occupation pulled out. How dare they reject our gift of civilization

Especially when you could just ask Bob McHicksville with the "Terrorist hunting permit" who would tell you with a straight face that he'd be bombing soldiers too if a foreign country was occupying the US. Probably a Red Dawn reference thrown in for good measure.

I was an adult with a little baby so I was super distracted at the time but I clearly remember Michael Moore getting excoriated for saying something like, "We are the redcoats, they are the Minutemen, and they are going to win."

You'd see it even in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and the run-up to the wars. "They hate us for our freedom." No, they hate us because they can't have a sovereign government without the U.S. State Department overthrowing it

how much of a huge apparatus of alterity they are going to have to build really quickly in order to say the people of Minneapolis (!) are resisting "civilization" because they're the other
