I published this story about Pancho Villa, The Punitive Expedition, American imperialism, The Mutual Film Company and cinema as mnemonic device. I want to thank Sarah Broderick for choosing this piece and helping edit it and Yosh Haggerty for helping publish it.

For other blankies on here, finding it increasingly funny that David Sims keeps calling 5’10’’ Robert de Niro “tiny” “slight” “littlest actor in Hollywood” “lacking inches”

EXCLUSIVE: Pete Hegseth wanted Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s globe for his office. His staff broke it. The Pentagon denied us access to take photos, but we obtained some anyway. A story in global affairs: wapo.st/3WF2YQo

NVIDIA CEO JENSEN HUANG SAYS HE BELIEVES MOST PEOPLE IN GERMANY WILL MOSTLY WORK INSIDE A DIGITAL TWIN OF THEIR COMPANY, BUILDING DIGITAL CARS WITH DIGITAL BRAINS, WITH AI ROBOTS BUILDING ROBOTIC CARS INSIDE ROBOTIC FACTORIES

Squinting intriguedly hearing the plot of Digger, chuckling ruefully when it gets bad reviews, smiling serenely as people mount defenses of the movie, nodding sagely as I read how these staunch defenses are actually examples of gendered power imbalances, all while never getting close to seeing it

I was thinking re: Joyce Carol Oates, about Nathanial Hawthorne referring to popular, formula driven writers as a "damned mob of scribbling women." I think referring specifically to Maria Susanna Cummins formulaic (but pretty good) novel The Lamplighter outselling whatever dour book he had on offer

Old books will be relay the most disgusting story you've ever heard and then the narrator will say "and sundry other improper Tales of such vile Character that this Christian Pen would fain the Innocent Ear had not heard It in the first Place."

I had occasion to remember watching A Grin Without a Cat for a film class in undergrad with my classmates. 30 mins in there were disgruntled murmurs, 1 hour in, the students were in open revolt. By 1h 30 I was the only person left in the screening room. By 2h 30 I was really vibing.

Reading Cotton Mather and Samuel Sewall re: The Salem Witch Trials and now everything is Salem for me. I've got Salem goggles. Vampire movies? About the biting Salem witches? People apologizing for supporting Trump? Pathetic Salem judges asking for forgiveness? America? Salem.

I remember when Monica in Friends got fired over the phone for taking a "kickback" steak from the restaurant and frankly I didn't understand what was happening then at six years old, and still don't, but maybe it came from this meat heist

Can't wait for the whole of Bluesky, a site where you read and write little witticism, is divided into two camps that claims the other camp simply can't read. I'm so excited to see the epistemology, even the metaphysics used to define "able to read".

I don't know who this Elizabeth Holmes is, what did she do, sell a toaster strudel that killed you or something? All I can guess is she said, ya know, I've always wanted to be the Elmyr de Hory character in my own F for Fake
