It fascinates me how some people on social media nowadays actively seem to be weirded out when you attempt to actively interact with them, or to reply to their posts - as if they assume it’s a broadcast-first medium.

Other people have noticed this phenomenon too but danah boyd put the best slogan to it: social media is now parasocial media. Social media hasn't been social for a long while—how long depending on the platform, depending on the milieu. It's not folks sharing equally, but broadcasting and receiving.

I primarily use social media because I genuinely talking with and meeting new people, and I do at least try to read and reply to all interactions. I find it interesting how many comments I’ve received from other social media users about how apparently unusual my online behavior is in 2026.

I’ve always been a comparatively pretty high-active-engagement (IE, posting and replying, not just scrolling) social media, user, since I was a kid - but I do find it somewhere in between fascinating and alarming that being as active as I am appears to be becoming increasingly unusual.

1. I read pretty batshit insane quickly which helps a lot (I actually do log out of Bluesky all the time) and 2. Thanks to Trump 2.0 destroying multiple industries I used to work in at once, I don’t have a job. Though I was using Bluesky the same amount far as I can tell when I did have one.

I suspect a spend less aggregate time here than many other very active users do, but I try to compress that time into chunks of flurries of activity

Another thing is people with .05% the followers as you might not feel there's much point in posting, I feel like no one cares what I type here, and also they might be justified in not caring about most of my posts. I try to not clog up people's brains if I'm not saying anything novel.

And some people go nuclear if you reply in slight disagreement. Even just expressing a different pov without disagreeing will make people upset sometimes. There's a lot of people here with the "how DARE YOU reply to my post" attitude.

What I've come to realize is that it's basically impossible for people to tell if I'm disagreeing in order to further the conversation or to start a fight. Like, the comments here include me musing a bit about that: bsky.app/profile/ence...

For some reason NT people will sometimes assume a question asked in earnest is a passive aggressive dig. There's no known workaround for this.
