I keep banging the “USAID was good and we must confront the obscene wave of death MAGA’s destruction of it unleashed” drum because I *desperately* want Democrats and the Left to prioritize rebuilding global aid. We should rebuild it better, but we can’t just let Musk’s global massacre continue.

And right now, I really just don’t see anywhere near as much interest or passion as I’d like among Democrats and the Left in rebuilding a better, more equitable global aid and human rights protection system that can use our vast US wealth to save and improve lives.

I agree it's essential. But it's hard to be passionate about every one of the huge number of systems we need to rebuild...I keep reminding myself that this is the Reagan administration x 10,000, and if we don't work our asses off we'll still be digging our way out in 40 years.

So yes, this is why I’m really annoying about USAID on here: I spend a lot of time talking to people who are dealing with the direct, horrifying human fallout of the current aid funding crisis that Musk and Trump intentionally created, and it keeps me up at night.

I'm hoping that the plan is to get elected first and then pivot to international relations. Trust me as a Canadian we are not impressed with the general mushiness of the tariff pushback among all American politicians.

USAID is just one part of a long term project. All the foreign students will not be coming back once this is over. To rebuild our higher education system as a light that draws the best from everywhere we are going to have to invest in multiple foreign aid paths this admin destroyed.

Education is just one small part of rebuilding our image in the world. Putting resources in truly embracing the world as integrated and that we are the place where the world is welcomed economically, culturally and thru education should be our priority. Selfish reasons as well as selfless ones.

It always disappointed me that Democrats didn't take George W. Bush's accomplishments with PEPFAR and say, "This is a model of what we could do more of, at even larger scale."
