I've always been afraid that rattlesnakes were immortal, and this graph qualifies my fear with facts.

Rattlesnake Solutions@rattlesnakes.bsky.social

Since rattlesnakes are typically at the top of the list of animals people are scared of, let's qualify that fear with facts.

You should pay property taxes but only when you have a mortgage is a bizarre belief

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

will try to answer these in a piece next week but for now i will say that part of the *point* of court expansion, in my mind, is to create a disequilibrium — a potential race to the bottom — that will force a truce.

Steve Vladeck@stevevladeck.bsky.social

Calls for expanding #SCOTUS are entirely (and increasingly) understandable. But as today's "One First" explains, there are at least four difficult questions that those who support expansion should have to answer—especially as compared to other possible reforms: www.stevevladeck.com/p/bonus-257-...

This girl is 17 1/2. She's got arthritis. Her liver numbers aren't great. She's extremely thin and frail. And yet at 2am last night she got the zoomies and went yowling through the house, up and down the stairs, for over 20 minutes. She's not the hellraiser she used to be but she can still party.

We are 24 years away from when the world needs to be at net zero carbon emissions. Fossil fuel infrastructure and even some appliances have about a 25-year design life. That means that every gas power plant, gas pipeline, or gas boiler you install today is a middle finger pointed at your grandkids.

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

This was so much fun! We even got a group of people from Milwaukee to join us. Can't wait until next year's gathering.

CUrbanism Club@curbanism.bsky.social

We loved being a part of the second Illinois Strong Towns Gathering (STILL). If you're in Illinois and you want to join us, reach out! We'd love to tell you how you can help build a stronger town wherever you are. Thanks so much to Strong Towns Blono for hosting us.

Read this thread to remind yourself that life can be so beautiful and humans can be wonderful.

You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

I am a mom and scientist begging everyone to look closer at the muck. We’ve been conditioned to see wetlands as wastelands. But three decades of research, I see a fiercely defiant wilderness. The boreal mire is a dynamic carbon-trapping vault that in some places has outlasted ice ages. 1/

Dammit. I don't want to watch a four hour movie in a theater, but I might have to because I'd like to add to the number of people he knows are laughing at him in public.

Dan O’Sullivan@osullyville.bsky.social

Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.

I remember being so horrified by the original story, and it sounds like it's gotten even worse since then.

It's fascinating, to me, how many columns and articles were written after Biden's withdraw from Afghanistan about the looming humanitarian catastrophe that Biden caused and how many fewer were written about Trump slashing US humanitarian aid still being sent there from $3B/year to $0 in 2025.

I am fully in support of the kids' agenda!

I had a wonderful time at the Champaign County Democratic Party Blue Unity Gala! And got to tell IL House Member and Speaker Pro Tempore (and former Illini football player!) Kam Buckner how much I appreciate his advocacy for housing and transportation.

The real goal of the anti-trans movement is the erasure of trans people from public existence, and it's grotesque. Thread:

the thing about vocally refusing to vote all the time is that politicians will, entirely logically, write you off as “those people who refuse to ever vote”

Sad but very true.

In a lot of ways, the environmentalism of my parents' generation didn't ask anyone to sacrifice anything. People still drove (but it was a Prius), lived in the burbs (but with a beautiful garden), bought supermarket food (but bought organic). It was an aesthetic choice as much as anything. 🧵

Really good thread here! There are a lot of autoimmune diseases in my family, and there are times we know more about some things than our doctors do. Yes, I trust modern medicine. Also, I know that doctors are human and don't know everything and there's more to learn. It's a tricky balance!

Trump told 9/11 families that he was rescued from the rubble of the World Trade Center -- an obvious and shocking lie. Here's how the New York Times reports it. This is like reporting George Wallace's "segregation forever" speech as "Governor speaks at inauguration. Some remarks controversial."

Trump claims he was basically lifted out of the rubble on 9/11: "Two fireman, big strong guys, they grabbed me under the arms -- 'got to get our of here!' -- and they literally lifted me up, and they started running with me."

I’ll say it again: Every time Illinois state representatives choose not to expand multifamily housing rights, they admit they’re okay with Texas snatching our electoral votes. Local housing micromanagement is ensuring Republican dominance for years to come. Time for the state to crack down.

My lukewarm take on 1.5 stories is that climate is only one of many reasons to phase out fossil fuels, and probably not in the top two reasons for most people. We should do it regardless, to save millions of lives per year from air pollution, reduce exposure to high and volatile fossil prices, and..

Great news that this is now mainstream thinking!
